you should definitly register soon!! I think its more for the bridal shower then anything.. and sometimes people who cant make it to the wedding will send a gift off the registry :)
Dont send out those little papers that say where.. basically whoever throws your bridal shower will spread the word... people will definitly be asking her where you are registered.

Well, I think you register as a convenience to your guests and to limit duplicate gifts. We registered as soon as we got engaged because everyone wanted to know where they could buy us engagement gifts. You will probably get most of the items for your shower, but I'm sure many will buy early to give at your wedding. People will learn from word of mouth and usually in a shower invite, it says where you're registered.

Plus It's great so you don't get that picture frame you can't return anywhere - good way to avoid getting the gifts you hate and getting the ones you want.
I registered in the store & online at Crate and Barrel - it's been great - they never hassle me - one thing I got, they fogot something the box & sent me another one no questions asked...

Where we registered (Fortunoff and Bed Bath and Beyond) you did not need to make an appointment.

You register for gifts for engagement as well. We didn't have an engagement party but people sent us stuff from registry and my shower presents were from my registry as well.
