Someone once told me that the safest place for your ring is on your finger. I wore it to the beach for a week with no problems.
If it makes you feel more comfortable, get it insured.

FH put it on his renters policy. it's not that much. I think just under $200 a year.

I wouldn't wear it to the beach. Furthermore, I got married in two wedding bands (a diamond eternity band and a gold band) so that I could still wear a band to those 'don't' places.
