Since many of you are from L.I........

Original post by KathleenG

I need honest opinions. I got word that my dad and sister (who are organizing my shower) are having it in Manhattan. My immediate family is there but I am in Brooklyn. I could care either way where my shower is but FH has said early on that if it was in the city, A LOT of people wouldn't show. A huge chunk of the list (more than half) is from L.I. He already said that both his sister's and mom would not come. We already gathered that many of my family dislike going into the city. My question is: Should this be such a big deal? I just went to my FSIL's shower without question and it was two hours away. I understand many people have issues, but I am talking about people who I am close with ie. close family members as well as his family. By the way, most if not all of the Long Island people come from Nassau; they are not even all the way out East (which would be somewhat understandable if that was a problem). Any opinions?

We had our E-party in the city on a Sunday afternoon and everyone loved it. We invited about 100 people and we had almost 80. But various people couldn't come b/c of babysitting problems and things like that. Nothing having to do with it being in the city

I absolutely agree! People commute everyday to Manhattan, there is no reasonable excuse for them not coming, IMHO.

Then again, I once knew a twenty six year old woman who lived in Long Beach all her life, and had NEVER been to Manhattan.

Weird.

My shower is in Rockland, where my Mom lives, and we are running into the same problem.

i think a lot of the time people are lazy and don't want to be bothered taking the time to travel anywhere, no matter how convenient it might be to get to where they have to go. but especially in the case of close or future family, that is not an excuse!

heres my take on people traveling for events- if people want to come they will come whether its a mile away or 100 miles away. if they dont come- i dont think its the distance - i think its their desire to go.

It's not like your having it in TX or California. It's Manhattan. I wouldn't change it!

If I was a friend of yours and I cared I would be there unless there was a circumstance beyond my control. Like if I broke my tailbone (the reason I just missed a friends shower that was 4 hours away) otherwise I would have been there and other friends of hers that live here went. I would have it where you are comfortable having it.

I have to agree with everyone, if the person was important to me I would go no matter where it was.

ok my spin on this - i use to live in the city and since i moved out east i abslutely refuse to go back there - i hate driving in the city and avoid it at all costs -
personally if the shower was in the city i dont know if i would go - if it was my sister's shower maybe - but other than that i would probably pass just because i hate driving in manhattan.
just being honest - i have alot of neighbors who are city transplants and they feel just like i do - it isnt somthing personal - but i kinda feel like i left there for a reason and i am not inclined to go back unless it is something major - i would go into the city for the wedding, but the shower just isnt as important to me
sorry to be frank - just trying to give an honest opinion
