since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

When a women and male file a joint return the taxpayer, which is the first line in the tax return, is always the male. It is irregardless that the wife might be the one who works, and the husband doesn't. The husband is always the taxpayer and the iwfe is always listed as the spouse.

I am either taking this out of context or looking at incorrect info. I just went and downloanded 2003 form 1040.

In the first few lines of the form there are no prefixes deliniating Mr, Ms, or Mrs. nor does it say anywhere that the husband's name should appear first.

What am I missing? Which forms does this appear on?

When we prepare the returns, I was told to put taxpayer as the husband, and when ever you get a letter from the IRs for a joint return they use the man's ss# as the primary #

While I find it aggravating, it doesn't surprise me that much. There are some aspects of society that are still somewhat archaic in that respect. On the mortgage paperwork, DH is listed as the borrow and I'm the co borrower-it means nothing but it's those little assumptions that are made. Meanwhile I was the breadwinner for a long time.

Oh, is it bad then if I am listed as the borrower and DH as co-borrower for our mortgage? We have the preapproval and this is just the way we filled it out because we went through my bank.

It doesn't matter. I suppose there can only be one 'borrower'.

But you're not required to do it this way, nowhere on the form does it put the husband's title first. The way you stated it before was as if it was required by the gov't, not your tax agency

I am the borrower on my mortgage but I filled the paperwork out that way, and I told my lawyer I wanted my name first.

According to my boss, he said you can not file a return with the wife as the taxpayer, the gov't recognizes the man's ss# as the primary ss#.

I cannot believe how out of hand this thread has gotten...
The reason so many people responded is b/c we CARE!!!! We're passionate people who want equality for all homosexuals...

Most New Yorkers are open minded ..I'm shocked by the number of women on this site who can't see it.

Without people expressing themselves and standing up for their rights...we'd be back in the 1700's!!!!

Then please tell me where is it stated? Or is this the 'unofficial' rule of thumb?

I am not sure where it is stated, my boss told me about it, and it was also mentioned in my Graduate tax class and my undergrad tax classes.

I have never done the research myself, since I have trusted the individuals that I have heard it from.

I dont think that it is required that you put the husband's name first. However, I think you do need to be consistent with the order. So if you put the iwfe first the year they got married, then she should go on first for all the following years as well. It's probably just industry standard to put the man first, that way there are no mix-ups if you are missing a previous year tax return.
