FH's parents went to a buffet style wedding once and they didn't like it very much. They said by the time the last table got up for food their was hardly anything left and the people that went first were already done eating. Don't know how often that happens though

I've been to a buffet style wedding & it was great! Only bad thing was that the cocktail hour was 'toned down' since a lot of the hot food was brought out during the wedding. Good Luck :)

I've been to one and it was very nice. It was a Sunday afternoon wedding so it was a lot like a brunch buffet...there were a bunch of different stations so there was never really a line of people waiting to get food.

I dont think you can go wrong either way. But for my wedding I wanted a sit down dinner because I feel its a lil more formal. Plus I dont want my guests lining up for food. Ok for a party but not what I was going for for the wedding.

I personally just feel like Sit Down is more formal. I've been to a buffet wedding and the line was super long and I felt like it was really crowded around the buffet. It could've just been the place but it was definitely more informal.

I personally feel that a sit down dinner is more formal. However, whichever youd prefer is whats best in the end. The problem I tend to have with buffets is that some people are done eating, before others have even started. Id rather all my guests be served at the same time.

if it is done right, buffet style can be great...
like as a continuous cocktail hour where food is constantly brought out and kept neat.. I've never been to a wedding like this, but I think when done well, it could be a fun idea JMO

Re: sit down vs buffet style?

I was at a wedding this past July. Everything was beautiful, but the main thing I remember is what a disaster the buffet-style dinner was. We had to wait forever for food; people who had trouble standing/ walking couldn't get their own food; people who were getting food for others who couldn't walk had to balance two plates. Forget going up for seconds. We weren't even able to see what was at each station; we had to wait on line for 20 minutes to see what was even there.

Sit down dinner 100%.

I personally think sit-down is better for a wedding and makes your day a true formal affair ;)

I agree that sit down is much more formal and that's why I wanted it.
I only went to one wedding that had a buffet, but it was at a rented hall with outside caterers and it really wasn't very good. But I wouldn't rule it out just because of that - at a regular catering hall it would be done MUCH better, and I've heard that weddings with a continuous cocktail hour style buffet is so great. It does leave time for dancing and mingling!!

This! I've never been to a buffet for a wedding, so I can't say from personal experience.

I'm not a fan, just because they bring down the formality of the wedding. A close friend had a buffet at her Majestic Gardens wedding, and the food was amazing... but it was definitely a different experience than all the other sit-down wedding dinners I've had.

I think any formal affair should be a sit down dinner. IMO

buffet is great for the rehearsal dinner, but not formal enough for the reception IMO
