I always found it better for me to do crunches. I always end up straining my back when I do sit ups, of course I'm probably not doing them right. Small localized movements work best for me.

I tend to do crunches. If I were to do traditional sit-ups, my hip flexor muscles help out and that doesn't make for an effective ab workout. Crunches are much harder and focus more on the abs; I can do sit-ups all day but I can't do nearly as many crunches.

P.S. just thought I'd add that doing planks REALLY works the abs - especially if your abs are already fatigued from crunches.

I second the planks !!! They are killer and really work well.

Get in the push-up position. Just hold it with your back perfectly flat (don't arch). Try to hold it for as long as you can.
You can also bend your arms and support yourself on your forearms if arms straight is too hard.

crunches are defintiely better, sit ups are dangerous for your bak (this si coming form someone with back problems). I took dance for many uears and we had to do hndreds of crunches in class, but we would get YELLED at if we did even one situp!

ETA: coming from another back health POV, my physical therapist encourages me to do crunches, but says even in regular sitting up from laying down I should NEVER do it like a situp, always roll over on your side to sit up from laying down. If hey say not even to do it just to get up, I can imagine how bad repeating it is!
