Re: size
If you mean CARAT... there is no average in my opinion.
If you mean CORSET.... I think there is no average here either, everyone is a different shape and size

Re: size
I agree I have friends who have .50 carats and others with 3 carats and ones with anything in between. I don't think there is any set or average size. Some people want a bigger one and some want a smaller one for various reasons and money is not the only consideration

Re: size
According to this The Details of Diamonds and a few other sources, the average size of engagement rings sold in the United States is 3/4 carat.
I tend to think though, that women in NY wear rings that are larger than the national average. I'd say about 1 ct to 1.5
Could be due to several reasons. One being that women who live in major cities also get engaged at a later age than the national average. Chances are, if you get engaged in your early 20's, a big ring may not even be an option or even a priority, as opposed to getting engaged later, when your FH is already established in his career to the point where a larger diamond won't necessarily break the bank.

Re: size
Most people I see have around a carat and a half. My friend thinks that anything smaller than 2 carats is on the smaller side. I guess it is the girl's opinion. I do think that girls today do get bigger rings. Some people prefer smaller rings. I guess it is what looks good on you.

Re: size
Wow - a very good quality 2 carat is about 25K. I think it depends on what's important to the bride; if size if the top priority a 2 carat diamond can be bought for 5k.

Re: size
I think quality definitely plays a role...I have 1.6, but DH did a lot of research and bought a top of the line diamond...he said he could have easily bought a diamond over 2 carats, but it would be of lesser quality...
just a funny story...DH's cousin was telling us about her friend who is waiting to be engaged...she said she expected 1 carat for every year of dating...they have been dating for 6 years!!! I think shes going to have to wait a while!!

Re: size
i think it just depends on what looks good on you. i'm pretty short and have really small hands so a 2 carat would look ridiculous on my hand. it's all opinion really. i think smaller diamonds can look just as beautiful as big ones if they sparkle :)

Re: size
I also have a diamond that is 1.6, but my fiance did all he could to make sure it was the best color possible. He also would not buy unless it was in the v's! I agree, it is all what you like. My cousin has a 1 carat ring that is absolutely beautiful!!

Re: size
I think it has to do with age as well. My friends that are married and more my age have between .5 and 1 carat I would say on average. However my older friends in their thirties they tend to have over a carat. I would think on a whole average would be about 3/4 carat b/c thats considering from smallest to largest.

Re: size
Yabbobay: I know of a girl who said the same thing to her DH...a carat per year...and she got it!!! 7 carats or something like that, but I've never seen it.
Most of the people I know have between .5 and 1.5, with the exception of the story above!

Re: size
I think its just preferance. I wanted a 1 carat and i got it. my fingers are small and with a large carat it would probably look funny on my finger.
What even makes my ring a lot more special to me is the stone is not my stone. Its my mom's. I am an only child, so i would get her ring anyway when she passes so she told Brian and I that we could have her ring and have it reset. Her ring is 25 years old. So Brian went to my parents house one morning and he got my mom's ring and he had it reset. I had no idea of when he did all of this.
I hope to pass this ring onto my daughter if I have one.

Re: size
I like when the ring has a significance. My mother is not really into jewelry so she told my dad all she wanted was a wedding band no engagement ring. I would have loved to have her ring.
I have a friend who's mother and dad were together from they were very young. Well the husband would always upgrade the ring over the years. Well the mother passed away and now each of the five daughters wears a ring their mom once had. I almost cried when she told me the story.
