Skin...

So this is a little embarassing, but I was wondering if there are any other brides who have skin issues. I always have, and I have been to many different dermatologists and nothing seems to work. With the wedding less than 3 months away, I am starting to get more depressed than usual about my skin. I went on Accutance once a long time ago, and that worked pretty well, but it all came back. I have no insurance now so I can't go to a dermatologist or go back on Accutane. I am currently using ProActiv, but seeing no results. I thought maybe someone else has gone through the same thing and can offer some advice. TIA.

i did go through the same thing, it s*cks im sorry and know you feel. I ended up going to this place that came highly recommended and getting a facial once a month for 6 months before the wedding. Can get pricey though.

I feel you on the whole dermatologist thing, didnt work for me either and everything they gave me either burned my face one time, or dried me out horribly. THe only thing i liked at the derms office was getting a cortizone shot in an emergency case lol, so maybe do that right before the wedding if anything happens.

Here is the funny thing. I have tried so many things, with derms, with facials, with so many skin care products, expensive and inexpensive, you name it i did so many of the. I did proactiv and did work for me, how long have you been doing it for? usually takes about 2 weeks to see results, but does try you out. BUT recently ive been trying something and its working better than any products i used, or any treatments. Its so inexpensive and you already have it at home so you dont have to go and buy anything. I had read about sugar being amazing for your skin and decided why not try it out. What i do is take dove soap, foam my hands up with the soap and then add sugar to it, it turns into a paste then put it on your face for about 10-15 mins then when you go to wash it off, massage it first into your skin a bit but gently and then wash it all off. Its so funny but my skin is looking better than it has, and when i started i had a bad break out, and normally would take a bit to go away but with this went away right away. It makes your skin SOOO soft too. Others have tried it too and told me they love it now. I have gone the more basic and natural way and its working. I also put ponds cream after i do the sugar and soap thing and its great

I never had acne as a teenager, of course I get it as an adult. it's embarrassing because it makes me feel like I'm 14, going through puberty.

The best product I've found are the Stridex pads. You can get them at any drugstore. I use them twice a day. The easiet part is you can carry them around...so if I go to the gym, I can bring them with me until I can go home and use my face wash.

Thanks for responding! I am willing to try anything at this point, so that sounds like a plan. I have ben using ProActiv for a little over a month, and it's just not working. I will try this and let you know how it goes. I want 2009 to be the year that this is no longer a problem!

yeah its funny bc with proactiv its hit or miss. I know ppl who used it and said it did nothing for them but for me and others it worked, just depends on your skin i guess.

Yeah and with the sugar and soap thing, why not try it since you dont have to pay anything for it and waste money. See if this will work for you, i was shocked by it considering i use so many other things and nothing worked as good. But i think with chemicals in other products that might be the problem who knows. GOod luck and i know how you feel, i hate it so much so hope 09 your skin will be great. I also had no pimples as a teenager and started in my mid 20's.

Or if you want to go for a facial i can recommend the place i went to. They are AMAZING and have helped ALOT of ppl with skin problems. She has alot of clients who went to derms for years and nothing but went to her and she was able to help them. They have facials specifically for problematic skin. The place is called KImara Ahnert

Honestly, it's difficult b/c you don't have health insurance but the thing that worked best for me was going on birth control pills. It totally cleared up my skin and fast!

me too.. i never had BAD skin per se, but from being on BC pills, I rarely ever get breakouts. I get a small zit once in a blue moon. you should really consider it.

Aww Hugs -- skin can stress u out and then u break out more and then get caught in the cycle!!!!

I have an EXCELLENT derm -- but I feel ya on the insurance thing so when I couldn't go to him facials where the KEY.

Ok for a budget I know this sounds crazy but I went to Chinatown/Lower East Side -- and they have these GREAT package deals -- 10 facials for $500 or even less depending on the facial type. .

Full facials with oxygen treatment, extractions, exfoliation, laser EVERYTHING. Your skin will look amazing -- I was a skeptic but it was better than facials I had gotten at shi-shi places like Red Door, Bliss etc.

I have super super dry skin which makes me break out when my skin tries to help me 'moisturize' by clogging my pores. Then I breakout! Crazy eh?

Also I highly reccomend the La Roche Posay line (can be found at Duane Reade etc. it was like night and day for my skin).

Thank you to everyone responding. I was actually on bc for a long time and had hoped it would help but it didn't. I even tried switching to a brand that I was told really helped to clear skin and it didn't work. Of course, now that I have no insurance, I am not on anything. I really appreciate the feedback, though. Like I said, at this point, I will try anything.

I was on it when I was very young...maybe 14 or 15. I know you can go on it a second time but none of the derms I went to thought my skin ever got bad enough for me to go back on it. Some people, including FH, tell me that my skin is not that bad and I am crazy, but of course, it is different when it is your own face. My big prob is I have scars and still break out.

i used to break out all the time but like others said once i started birth control no more break outs. i get one pimple a month on the first day of my period & thats it.

i know a couple of people who use proactive & it worked miracles for them.

at first i started off once a week since its an exfoliator, but now im doing it 3-4x a week and its fine. I massage it in gently so im not irritating my skin and i pay attention to that and if i do see that ill cut back. SO i guess just do it how many times you want lol.

I just want to say that you girls are fantastic.
My FH suffers from Acne and can get SUPER depressed about it at times. I can relate to how you're feeling and how you're worried about your skin.

I put oatmeal masks on him and it helps tons! Seriously, just oatmeal with a bit of milk. His face looks really healthy afterwards. I'll try the dove and sugar. I'm determined to have 2009 and onward be acne free for him. I hate to see him get down about it.

I have some pretty bad skin too and birth control pills has done nothing for me at all.

I just started using a mask every other night from Mark (the avon based company) called shine fighter, and already after using it a few times i am noticing my skin is drying up pretty quickly. I also am using a spot gel from avon's clearskin line that helps dry up pimples within a day or two. in the past I have used the apricot scrub for oily skin and that used to help really well.

Re: Skin...

I also started breaking out as an adult and it s*cked. I went to a dermatologist for years, did the facial thing and tried everything but Accutane. Then I tried a new dermatologist who recommended sulfamethoxazole (that's the generic form) and it works great! Now I never worry about breakouts. Maybe you can go to a dermatologist and request a prescription for this stuff. Unlike Accutane, it does not require constant follow-up and testing so that may help your financial concerns.

As for Proactiv, my understanding is that if benzoil peroxide works for you then Proactiv will work for you. However, if you've tried over the counter stuff and it has not worked, Proactiv will probably not work as its chief ingredient is benzoil peroxide.

Good luck!

The only thing that has worked for me is benzaclin but without insurance it can get very expensive!

Proactiv really didn't help and it dried out my skin a lot but when I called to cancel the salesperson convinced me to try their sensitive skin version... Surprisingly, it helped a lot! and it didn't dry my skin out like regular proactiv.
