Re: Skin question...

Nothing except oral meds will help those under the skin pimples...if i get those i go to the dermatologist and get a cortizone shot and its gone the next day. The derm has confirmed those are mostly hormonal.

For the small zits...i use Retina A Micro....it works pretty quickly....

Re: Skin question...

Stef - unfortunately, I am one of them....I actually went on 2 courses....
3 years ago for 6mos., and then 1 1/2 years ago again for another 6 mos. (2nd derm thought that first derm didn't use the correct dosage for me and that's why it came back) but NO SUCH LUCK!
It's back!!!!!

Oh well......

And also, any Drem will tell you that not all oil is bad oil....there are certain types that clog and others that don't, and your skin needs a certain amount of oil to balance.....
My derm actually recommended Vitamin E oil for my skin and it has helped (and I have oily skin to begin with)

Re: Skin question...

Wow ladies - I know misery loves company, I'm just glad I'm not alone...

Accutane is just out of the question. I want to TTC within the year...

I went to a dermatologist years ago, but I found after seeing him, my skin would break out more after he picked are proded...

It's at this time of year that I get depressed...I love the summer, but thinking about going to the beach without any makeup on makes me depressed...

Thanks ladies...I guess I'll try the dermatologist again, and maybe try getting facials once a month.

Leelee - what is that thing you mentioned you have?

Oh, and by the way - I'm not on the pill....

Re: Skin question...

Try Proactive - - someone I know swears by it, and her skin cleared up really well.

Re: Skin question...

Any dermotologist recomendations??? I live in Bellmore and work in Hicksville, so anywhere in between or close by would be good. He$$, I'll travel a little for a good one!!

Re: Skin question...

Marni--it's PCOS, polycystic ovary syndrome. It's when your hormones are off and it can cause acne, weird hair growth, etc.
My acne stems from that..the pill definitely has helped me more than anything but I still get breakouts every once in a while.

Re: Skin question...

Thanks anyway-
I tried proactive and it worked wonders for a while, but then I must have become immune to it...the same with the Murad (another infomercial)

Re: Skin question...

Leelee-
Hmmmm...how did you get diagnosed with that? Would that show up in a PAP?

Re: Skin question...

Leelee- I have PCOS also

Marnles - more info:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal imbalance condition in women that affects ovulation. For these women, normal, regular ovulation does not occur. This hormonal imbalance also affects other body systems, such as metabolism and cardiovascular system. The cause of PCOS is not fully known. PCOS occurs in 5% to 10% of women age 20 to 40.

PCOS has many symptoms that occur either early in the condition or develop gradually. Because there is such a wide range of symptoms, PCOS is defined as a syndrome, not a disease. PCOS may include irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, acne, excess hair growth, or diabetes. The ovaries become enlarged and contain one or more abnormal cysts. See an illustration of the female reproductive organs.

You can get a blood test done first. If it comes up positive they usually send you for a sonogram, if cysts shoe up, they may also send you for an internal sonogram. It will not show up on a pap.

Re: Skin question...

I had a lot of break outs in HS...but when I finally went on Accutane...i only did for like 2 months (I started to get heart palpitations)..but that was really enough...

now I get the occasional zit...but its usually hormonal...and I have a little redness on my cheeks...but I think thats heredity...my mom has that (rosasia?)

the best thing to do is to go to the derm...they won't put you on accutane right away...its the when everything else fails...

Re: Skin question...

Everything Liz just said! A good blood workup will show any hormonal imbalances. When I first was diagnosed years ago...I was skipping my periods, spotting in between and of course, the acne was really bad.
Liz...you are my cyster!

Re: Skin question...

Thanks a bunch...I have VERY regular periods, so do you think it's a possibility?

Leelee Posted:

Re: Skin question...

It still could be but I think irregular periods is the most common sign. If you have peculiar hair growth, severe acne, etc. though, it might be worth having your blood checked!
I wouldn't worry too much about this facet...it's not overly common!
Good luck to my Peeing Elk...I'm sure you're beautiful with pimples anyway!

Re: Skin question...

Wow, I was going to post about this a few days ago and never did. I, too, never got acne until I was about 19-20. I read somewhere that acne can often flare up for someone in their twenties because people that age often engage in the types of activities that help cause it: social smoking, falling asleep with makeup on, etc. I don't do any of those things, though, so I don't know what happened with me.

If anyone has a dermotologist they can recommend, please let me know. Anywhere in Suffolk or even eastern Nassau at this point is fine.

Re: Skin question...

I also have PCOS. When I was on the pill, my skin was OK. Now that I am no longer on the pill and TTC - there is very little I can use on my skin. So naturally my skin is awful!

But it is nice to know that I am not alone!

Re: Skin question...

Jeanene..I was just talking about this! I've been wondering what's going to happen to me when I'm TTC and go off the pill!!
I switched from the pill to the patch this month (I'm going to switch back to the pill) and my skin looks horrendous!!!
I hate it!!!!

Re: Skin question...

I guess we'll just have to be light-hearted about it.....we can be known as the pimple pals!

Re: Skin question...

Pimple pals!!! That's too cute!!!!

Know what I really hate? When I see 16 year old girls with perfect skin!!! Aren't the supposed to have acne and I'm supposed to have perfect skin???
