Since FH and I have such a short time from the church to the reception the photographers we met with have suggested not having a receiving line. Has anyone done this? Do you think it is rude not to do this? Also, I really want my guests to throw rice (birdseed?)at us when we leave the church. Would I have to skip this?
Any ideas would help!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
we're not doing it - I hate receiving lines at weddings...I think it's awkward and I don't like waiting in the line...we're just going to walk around during the reception and say thank you to everyone.

We also plan to skip the receiving line at church. I didn't want ot miss out on the rice thing either so we are going out and back around the church to come out again. hehe I know it sounds crazy but i don't want to miss the photo op. We plan to receive our guests at the cocktail hour so we are sure not to miss it ourselves.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We don't have much time between our ceremony and reception and it's all in the same place!!! instead of doing the receivig line. DH and I will go from table to table during the reception and thank our guests for coming.

We're skipping it. Our ceremony is 11:30 at the hall and cocktail hour is 12:00. No time really. Besides, I'm not crazy about receiving lines. We're doing pix before ceremony so we'll be able to see everyone at the cocktail hour.

But do you think people EXPECT you to have a receiving line? I think my mother might give me a hard time about not doing this.

I want to skip it as well. We'll probably get some grief from someone. But oh well!
I've had it with making other people happy.

For what it is worth, Jewish weddings don't have them!
I think you'd have to just disappear right after you walk up the aisle or you will get stuck having one!

We are skipping this as well. Just like you, there is not enough time. We will thank everyone at the reception.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
It's totally up to you. We had time in between (ceremony at 3:00 and cocktails at 6:30) but I wanted time for pictures AND to be at the Cocktail hour, so we had a receiving line with just me & DH. It worked out perfectly. We had the right amount of time and I really liked seeing everyone right after the ceremony. It's something YOU have to decide on, not your photographer (remember YOU are paying them; they will do what you say.)

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
we just met with our photographers and they said the same thing...we will be skipping it...but i made them promise that we will be able to form a recieving line as all enter into the CH (a friend did this and it was a nice idea)...that way it also prevents us being tied up all night walking from table to table

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I have to admit that we attended 2 weddings in August and didn't even notice until I read this thread that neither had a receiving line. One of the ceremonies was held at the reception hall....the other at a church and reception at a separate location. We probably won't do one either....where would you set that up as you go from one spot to the other at the reception hall??
the FILs may not like it but i want the wedding to have a modern and fresh feel, not stale and done a billion times over!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I think we have to skip it, too. We're having the cerermony at the reception hall, and we have no time at all - as it is, we'll miss most of the cocktail hour. We'll make the rounds once we get back to the cocktail hour.

We are skipping, we need the time for pics before the sun goes down!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We are skipping. We're getting married during Daylight savings and we have maybe an hour of daylight to catch a few shots outdoors. From what my photographer said, she said once we walk out of the ceremony we should go over to the side right before the exit doors of the church and just take a minute. I think there is a little space/room we can hide in. She will keep our guests at bay and help shuffle them out of the church. Though we aren't permitted to throw rice, but we will be able to exit the church with our guests outside waiting for us. Our limo company has arranged a champagne toast once we get to the car, I will raise my glass to my guests and take off. I will do my hellos throughout the cocktail hour and some of the reception.
We skipped the receiving line. No one noticed! All you have to do is tell your limo driver and photographer. After we walked down the aisle, we got out of sight and the bridal party got out of sight from the guests and they went outside to wait for us to walk out of the church and we did the petal throwing and we got right into the limo and left. It saved so much time, so me and dh could enjoy the ch after pics.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
Most of the weddings I have been to lately do not have receiving lines. I think some of the older people might miss it, but you should be able to talk to everybody at cocktails.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We're doing the receiving line at the Church because we'll have over 200 guests, and I am worried it will take too long to get around to every table at the reception.
A friend of mine that got married in May didn't do a receiving line, and she said that she wished she had done it. They felt like they spent so much time greeting everyone at the reception that they didn't get to dance as much as they would've liked and they felt rushed eating their dinner. Speaking from a guest's perspective, we would've preferred the receiving line at the church. We ended up waiting at our table for them to get to us because we didn't want to miss them, and we missed out on a lot of dancing/socializing with other tables.
ETA: We're just doing the receiving line with the two of us (no parents or bridal party) so that it will go faster.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I don;t think you need to have it, but a lot of people will want tog reet you especially people that come to just the church and not the reception. You don't need to have this in order to have the rice/birdseed throw..just have all the guests go outside and gather on the steps, the photogrpaher can orchestrate this for you, and it should be fine..
but i've actually never been to a church wedding that didn't have a receiving line
I hate them though..i think its the most awkward ridiculous thing
