Since FH and I have such a short time from the church to the reception the photographers we met with have suggested not having a receiving line. Has anyone done this? Do you think it is rude not to do this? Also, I really want my guests to throw rice (birdseed?)at us when we leave the church. Would I have to skip this?
Any ideas would help!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We're skipping it. We have time between the ceremony & CH to do pictures, so we'll actually make it to CH. We'll talk to the guests then.

I think we are going to skip it also. We will be crunched for time.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I will definitely be greeting the guests at the CH but if they are late they will have to meet me on the dancefloor for at the reception. I have no intention of spending my entire reception walking around the room. It's a party!
My cousin had a receiving line and she still walked around at the reception. She was so upset when the wedding was over because she felt like she missed her wedding.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
i went to a wedding a couple years ago that didn't have a receiving line. instead the bride and groom stopped at each row and everyone said caongrats to the couple then and then by the time the B/G were to the doors of the church, everyone was already outside with the bubble awaiting them.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I want to skip it, but my mom is dead set on us doing it, so to make her happy we are doing it. We are just going to have myself and FH stand on the receiving line to make it move faster.

We don't have the time either. We are skipping the receiving line. We will exit out of a side door after we leave the church and then we will have the bridal party remind people to stay so that we can exit out of the church for pics.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
I think I may be the odd (wo)man out! We'll be having a receiving line. Two reasons, I know that we'll have many people coming to the church that aren't attending the reception & I also think it's a special moment to greet well wishers while both sets of parents and our priest are present. Will it cut into photography time - yes! But I'm ok with that. To your question... I don't think it's rude at all not to have one.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We skipped it...it was totally unnecessary in our eyes...No one gave us grief about it either. We used the time that's normally given for a receiving line for just him and I to have a private moment together...

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
we are skipping it too because we don't have time... my parents were annoyed.. I tried to explain.. I don't think it mattered though!!!
but... I am always uncomfortable doing it.. so I said .. no line.....
I'll figure out how it will work as the day comes closer...

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We are not doing one and here are my thoughts - a - I feel we are being considerate to our guests is that we did not leave much time between the church and hall so they are not hanging around with nothing to do. And b - we are paying a ton of money for our pictures so regardless of whether or not people get offended by no recieving line, I want time to get nice pictures!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We are definitely doing a receiving line, but I don't think it's rude not to! To be honest, I don't want to sound ungrateful, but a RL kind of encourages people to move it along. Where as if we were to greet people throughout the CH, we would miss the whole party, getting hung up into conversations with Aunt Sally's sister's son from her 3rd marriage, etc. That sounds snotty, but we are going to have 180+ people there! At 2 minutes a person, thats 6 hours! That's the whole party!

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
We're most likely skipping it. Our limo guy and photographer were freaking out over how little time we have to take pictures between the ceremony and the cocktail hour so the limo guy said he'll take us out of the church and then back in a side entrance until all the guests are filtered out.
My problem is I don't want to go around from table to table during the reception either. I'm paying for it - I want to enjoy it! I want to be able to dance! There's no guarantee we'll make it to the cocktail hour to be able to greet everyone so we might have to do the RL after all.

were not skipping- but it is going to be just me and him- no BP and maybe just the parents... Nice way for friends and family to congratulate Parents without bombarding them at reception

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
This post prompted a conversation with my mom this morning about what she thought we should do. We are going to be a bit tight on time on our wedding day, so I would like to skip it. My mom actually agreed, and said she didn't have one at her wedding (and they're still going strong after 40 years, so there's nothing superstitous about it! lol). She doesn't see the point, and either do I! So... RECEIVING LINE OUT, for us! I guess we'll just have the guests go straight outside, armed with red rose petals to throw, and then just do the pictures and be on our way! (my photographer recommended skipping the receiving line, too). Plus, we're adding a half hour to our cocktail hour, so we can mingle with everyone there without worrying about 'rushing'.

We're crunched on time as well, but the receiving line is tradition in both our families, so we'll be doing it.

Re: Skipping the Receiving line???
i never thought of doing this.. and now i am SERIOUSLY considering it! that time we spend having a recieving line we can put towards pictures and then have more time to mingle with guests during CH!
ETA: FH says Good by him and would LOVE to skip it.. my mom said you dont have to have one and supports us not having one... last wedding she went to they didnt have one, nor did my cousin now that i think about it... Yay... so glad this is not one i have to fight for!

We don't have much time between our ceremony and reception and it's all in the same place!!! instead of doing the receivig line. DH and I will go from table to table during the reception and thank our guests for coming.
