Do any of you have experience with Sleep apnea? My Dr. has recommended surgery to remove tonsils and part of the soft palatte. I am very nervous because I just had an awful time with my wisdom teeth being removed. TIA

Re: Sleep apnea?
My FH has it and has a mask to wear to help him breath while sleeping which was covered by insurance. I think some insurance companies won't cover the surgery until you try the mask first.
Good luck!

Re: Sleep apnea?
DH has it and unfortunately will not do anything about it ... it's a daily fight between us ... I wish he'd just go and at least weigh his options!
Do whatever you need to do to fix this problem, it really is serious

Re: Sleep apnea?
Did you have to go for a sleep study to determine this?
I fear my fiance has it, but I don't know where to start to get him a diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I went to a pulmonoligst, who ordered a sleep study. After the results of the sleep study, they said I had sleep apnea.
I would have your FI talk to his PCP. Sleep apnea is more serious than people think.

Thanks. After months of pestering him, he finally made an appointment with my doctor for a new patient appointment (or whatever they call it) because he hasn't had a regular doctor in over 10 years!!! He's gone to walk-in clinics the few times he was really sick.
I am going with him, and I will definitely mention this to the doctor.
He snores if he sleeps on his back or his left side- and sometimes it sounds like he's choking or gasping for air. It doesn't happen if he sleeps on his right side. He never feels rested after sleeping, either.

Re: Sleep apnea?
I snore something awful, but I also have really bad allergies. I don't feel rested in the morning even if I slept for 10 hours. I met with an ENT for an ear issue and she thought that because of my weight (I am a bit chubby) and the fact that I still have my tonsils and an extended palette, I most likely have sleep apnea. However, I don't want to sleep with that machine. It looks so cumbersome.
I am going back to her in two weeks and will speak with her further about the apnea. I would assume that you have to do a sleep study first.
If push comes to shove, I will have the surgery. I am just not sure about the recovery time. I seem to recover slowly from things.
I am also going to see this 'great' allergist next week to see if we can change some of my medications around. It has been difficult because I can't take anything this week in order to 'clean' out my system. Hence, I sit here with watery eyes!

I snored like a bear, would gasp for air all night (I never knew it though) and I NEVER felt rested!!!! Good Luck to him and you! Im sure the doctors will help him sleep better!!

Re: Sleep apnea?
My husband is a registered polysomnographer (he conducts and scores sleep studies).
There are different levels of sleep apnea (mild to severe) depending on a number of different factors. In order to get a definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea, you need a sleep study.
There are remedies (other than surgery) which help the condition, namely CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). In a sleep study, they will determine if you meet the clinical criteria for sleep apnea. The next step is to determine if CPAP is effective in treating the condition and finding a pressure that is right for you and helps with the apnea.
With CPAP, you need to wear a mask at night while you sleep. There are different types of masks that you can choose from depending on which one you find most comfortable.
If you have any questions at all about what to expect, feel free to FM me and I can ask my hubby.

Re: Sleep apnea?
My MIL has a severe case of sleep apnea and she doesn't fit the profile of people who get it. She's been through hundreds of masks and has yet to find one that she can stand. She's now going to a doctor who is custome making her this mouth piece that is supposed to help without her having to wear that stupid mask. We are so hopeful that this will be better for her. The surgery that they offered to do for this (I forget the name, but it's to remove that thingy that hangs in the back of your throat) is way to risky for her as she's 69 years old and it's only a 50/50 chance that it will work, so she cannot go that route. Let's hope they come up with some miracle cure for this.

Re: Sleep apnea?
My FH has sleep apnea and he sleeps with a CPAP machine. He sleeps like a baby every night with it on, but lately it is waking me up! It's a new one which doesn't make that much noise, but still..it wakes me up. I'm frustrated but I know he needs it.
