Help, Mia has been recently sleeping in our bed because she has outgrown her bassinet and we are currently waiting for her crib to be delivered (2 weeks) but here's the problem, she loves to sleep on her Tummy....she hates to be on her Tummy when she's awake but loves to stay there when she's sleeping.
Since she is right next to us I don't worry as much but want to break this habit before her new crib arrives....what can I do? Thanks!

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
I think she'll be fine once she's in the crib. They adapt so quickly. Sean started sleeping in his crib last week... should have been sooner but I couldn't part with him and he's gotten his best sleep there!! He slept 11 hours the last 2 nights!!
His 'tummy time' consists of him fussing for about 5 minutes and then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. It's his best nap!! I make sure I stay in the room with him the whole time he naps.
Can you sleep with her in the bed? We never brought Sean in the bed b/c I'm SO afraid of squishing him!!

Kathi she is in the bed with us....and I hate to say it but as a working MOM I love it when she cuddles with us!......she's getting her crib in a few weeks (it's on backorder) I just want to know if I'm doing the right thing...p.s. the crib will also be in the same room with us.

Is your problem you dont want her in your bed or you are nervous about her being on her belly??? How old is she?

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
I love her in our bed but it's only temporary because her crib is coming and when her crib arrives can I still keep her on her tummy as long as she's in the same room with us or should I start putting her down on her back now?

How old is she? Can she easily roll over on her own?

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
I would leave her on her back. SIDS is still a factor. Any amount of crying is SO much better than the other option
Maybe you can prop her on her side slightly so she isn't flat on her back.

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
My mom (a neonatologist who has done several researches regarding SIDS) has told me NOT to let Joseph sleep on his tummy through the night. She said to try his side if he doesn't like his back at least during the first 8 months. The risk for SIDS increases greatly if the baby is on tummy and most SIDS cases occur from the hours of 1am to 5am. She did tell me that once he starts rolling on his own to his tummy he is probably ok. I use a positioner just to be on the safe side though!

Thanks, that is what I thought and we do have the positioner and it will go great in her crib.

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
I would get the positioner. Be very careful with the blankets in your bed and pillow. And I know people feel 'safer' when the baby is in bed with them but with SIDS there is NO warning signs. I don't think a parent would know it was happening unless you were awake and watching her.

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
Can you try the side and roll up a couple of blankets or use the positioner to keep her in place?
I think as long as you follow safety guidelines while co-sleeping, having her on her tummy in your bed or her crib is the same thing in terms of risk for SIDS.
Interesting article I'm printing it to show DH. Thanks!

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
Ryan slept with us in our bed until only about 3 weeks ago (and he is 4 months old today). He also sleeps on his side all the time. Even in the crib. I still use the positioner but he stays on his side. Side is better than tummy. I constantly try to put him on his back but he won't stay. He rolls himself to his side - he's done it since he was about 2 months old. And since he tends to be gassy, the side sleeping seems to help his digestive system.
As far as the co-sleeping, I think every parent needs to find the sleep system that works for them. Ryan sleeping with us was a joy and made life so easy when I was BF'ing. Even after he went solely to formula he stayed with us. I only moved him because I started to want my space back and I wanted him to start getting used to the crib! But I miss him!
My SIL has 3 kids under the age of 6 and while I am NOT in any way endorsing or recommending it - all 3 of them slept on their tummies after the first month. She just felt it worked best for her kids - they slept better. She felt that as a generation, we all did it, so why not? There are other factors that contribute to SIDS besides tummy sleeping. Of course this is just my opinion (no need to lecture me on the dangers of SIDS - I've done my homework!) and SIDS is very scary and it's something I worry about, but again, every Mom has to do what works best for their baby - for Ryan it's on his side. Good Luck!

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
Lyndsey has been sleeping on her tummy ever since she learned to roll over...a sleep positioner would not work for her. I just make sure there is nothing in her crib for her to smother her face into.

Re: Sleeping On Tummy...
In a way I wish I had started Lyla sleeping on her tummy, even though we're not supposed to. She is very sensitive and anything wakes her up, including herself. She kicks her feet and moves her arms so much that when she starts to fall asleep she startles herself and wakes herself up. I try to do the side, and it worked more the first few weeks, but now she just ends up on her back. I think if she was on her tummy, she wouldn't be able to move so much.

** My son has been sleeping on his tummy since he was a few weeks old!!! **
I put that in stars to tell you its OK.... Some times they just prefer it the same way you or i do... He slept through the night when he slept on his belly.. It gave him security...
YOU know your baby... Can she move her head when shes on her belly? Side to side or does she keep it in one spot? does she sleep with her nose in the mattress? Are you putting a blanket or animals in the crib with her?
DONT stress it.. if thats how shes gonna sleep , thats how YOURE gonna sleep! Just do it wisely. Any questions please FM me.
