Sleeping through the night..

I keep hearing about babies the same age as mine (about 6 - 7 weeks old) that are sleeping through the night. Is this normal at that age? My son shows NO signs of sleeping through the night any time soon - he wakes every 3 1/2 to 4 hours to eat still. For those of you whose babies slept through the night this early, how did you get them to do it? Any tips would be appreciated - thanks!
Oh, I called my pediatrician about this - he told me that I should basically let my baby cry in the middle of the night when he wakes up - he says if I don't do it now, that it will be quite a long time before he will sleep for longer periods of time. I don't know how comfortable I am with doing that...

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Emma didnt sleep through the night till she was 9 months old. Some babies just dont do it. If you arent comfortable with letting him CIO then dont... there are some books to help like the No Cry Sleep Solution which give you some alternatives to help them sleep longer at night.

He also might be hungry... IMO hes too young not to want to eat at night atleast once.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Both of my kids started sleeping through the night at 3 months old but I considered myself very lucky because that seemed early. We didn't let them cry but what we did do at 3 months was move them from basinette in our room to crib in their room. My dh snores, there was a chance that he might've been waking them up!

Hang in there!

Re: Sleeping through the night..

My son will be 5 weeks tomorrow and he is up what it seems like, ALL the time. He is up every 2 to 3 hours to eat, and eating takes at least 1/2 hour, so that means by the time he goes back into his crib, I only get about 1 1/2 hours, sometimes a bit more, to sleep. Needless to say, I'm a zombie. I have a very hard time letting my son cry..... it's just not possible for me. He does start off 'whimpering', and at those times I don't necessarily jump to pick him up, but after a few minutes of it or when it gets to be a worse cry, then of course I run. The books say you can't spoil a newborn, so I would rather hold him and try to comfort him than let him cry.

My daughter just started sleeping through the night when she turned 3 months old.
We didn't do anything to change her schedule.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Jenna just started sleeping 7-8hrs a night last week. I'm not sure if coincidental or not, but it was the same day I switched her from the Dr.Brown's bottles to the PLaytex Ventaires. Even though the Dr.Browns are highly rated I found Jenna would gulp them down waaay to fast and get fussy afterwards. Now with these new bottles it takes her a bit longer to eat 4-5 ounces but she is sooo calm afterwards, laughing and cooing, and doesn't grunt in her sleep anymore. She also started sleeping thru the night the first night I used them and has since then.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

My girlfriend and her Dr. told me that if you can get them on rice cereal early that they will sleep longer because they are fuller. It has worked for both of my friends babies... She said getting them on a schedule helps you and them.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Matthew has been sleeping at least 6-8 hours at night since he was about 5-6 weeks old. I think it is because he eats alot, about 6-7 oz at most of his feedings. Once in awhile he sleeps only about 5 hours at night and occasionally as long as 10 hours. We don't have any type of schedule at this time, just go with the flow. I don't believe in spoiling a newborn either , but I have found there are times when Matthew just does not want to be held and cuddled. He would rather cry in his crib or swing for a few minutes then goes right to sleep. Babies sometimes get overstimulated. Breastfed babies tend to sleep less hours because the milk is easier to digest.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Emily started sleeping longer when she was around 6 weeks old. I had switched her formula to soy and she slept about five hours. I now feed her six to seven ounces at each feeding and she is sleeping anywhere from 7 to 9 hours!!

My son took longer, maybe 3 1/2 months. I tried the cereal and the crib and both did not work.
Knock on wood, they both sleep through every night.

Re: Sleeping through the night..

Jack is 10 days old and is sleeping for about 4 hours at a time. I feed him around 11pm and he usually wakes up at 3 for a feeding and then again at 6:30 or 7. So I guess everyone is different. Good luck.
