Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

Hello Ladies!

Let me start off by saying that I wrote this long winded post, but it said I wasnt signed in, so I lost the WHOLE thing! AHHHHHHH!

Anyway, I have a 4-prong princess cut in platinum and it was purchased out of state. We took it to Argyle Jewelers in Babylon for a re-appraisal, sizing and then sizing balls. Although I havent used them for anything else (I dont have much jewelery), they have been there forever and they are local. Anyway, they told me they would take care of cleaning and tightening whenever I need. I mentioned that I was interested in purchasing our bands there too (for that extra care). Anyway, my stone was loose, so I panicked and went in to see them, thinking something happened from the sizing. He said that could never happen when they do that and he really didnt want to tighten a ring that wasnt his. So I proceeded to tell him that we did all these things with him already, etc and he ended up doing it. He mentioned after that this setting ALWAYS has a loose center diamond and thats just the way it is.

Regardless of the slight issues with them, I am concerned that A. ANY jeweler will give me an issue because I didnt buy from them and B. I would have never went for this setting if loose diamonds are the issue.

Does anyone else have this style ring and issues with the rattling stone? Its happening AGAIN with me. I am concerned that I will lose it, even though the jeweler said that most likely it wont fall out unless I pryed the prongs open (and its insured). Im just scared... I love my ring, and I really just dont want to ALWAYS be concerned with the diamond all the time.......

THANKS in advance for your replies, and sorry for the novel!

I don't have a princess cut but I have a round stone in a 4 prong platinum and lost 2 of my small diamonds. I FINALLY brought it to my mom's jeweler and he told me I had 4 other lose prongs (DH's C-U-N-T was the jeweler he bought the ring from and she scr*wed him).

ANYWAY, Rubin is AMAZING! It is Bella Jewelers in Floral Park (a little far but worth it). Tell him that the DiTusa's sent you (Linda and Ellen). We ended up going there for our wedding bands and every other jewelry we need.

Good luck!

YES! I have a 4 prong princess and my stone was lose. At first I thought it was just how the ring was (it made that noise since the day FH proposed.) until I took it to get cleaned! Fortunately, where FH got the ring was local so they had no problem fixing the lose stone. They also told me to keep an eye out for this in the future because it does continue to get lose over time.

Have to called any other jewelers to see if maybe they can help you out? Maybe even a store like Kay or Zales because they are more of a chain type jewelers they might be more opened to help?

I have also heard that it is possible to add more prongs to help with this issue. I myself haven't done it but if your stone continues to be lose maybe it's an option for you?

I used to have a princess cut diamond in a 4 prong setting and it definitely is NOT supposed to be loose. Once it got loose (I knew this because when I shook the ring by my ear I could just hear a slight clinking noise, which was the stone moving back and forth) and I brought it back to wear I came from. The jeweler fixed it and it was no longer loose and did not make that noise.

I'm not really sure about the question about another jeweler handling your ring, but I think you should be able to find someone.

my stone is round but no diamond is supposed to be loose! I would suggest trying another jeweler.

My friend recommended Scott Marshall jewelry in Syosset and he has been great! We went there initially with my wedding band (that was my great grandmothers) but needed to be resized and he was fantastic! we ended up ordering FH's band from him too

So you have been told that this setting comes loose over time too... thats a 'good' thing I suppose. BUT, I just got it tightened on May 19th...which was only 2 weeks ago. I feel like it shouldnt be lose THIS soon, if anything. I have a desk job, and havent even had a hard bang with my hand yet (thank goodness).... its not like I am rough with it... :(

Re: Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

My setting is a 4-prong round stone, but when my FH proposed it was lose. It made the little jingle sound whenever I moved my hand. I was too scared to even wear it until it was tightened 3 days later.

The gentleman who tightened it assured us that it would not have fallen out if we had not had it tightened; also, the appraiser said the diamonds were secure (appraisal was prior to the tightening). I would get second or even third opinions regarding it's security. Return to the appraisal location and ask them, etc.

As far as the new jeweler not wanting to tighten the stone--- I have heard of similar things before, and I wouldn't take it as a sign that they are not good jewelers or not trustworthy. I think that he did not want to be held liable if the stone were to fall out after he worked on it. My friend went through similar issues when she got her ring. The stone and setting were from two different places. She felt it had been set crooked, and when she went to the place where the setting came from, they did not want to touch it because it was not their diamond.

Did you get insurance for the ring??? Would that help fix it and cover the costs in the event you end up losing the diamond???

Is it too far to go back to the store you purchased it in??

Re: Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

im in the business and i see it all the time. from round to princess to whatever shape. you dont release what you hit during the day or what little thing it might get caught on... i had a costumer pull a whole prong out when she was folding towels. it happens gold and platinum are soft (plat is even softer) thats why most of the time when we do Eng rings in plat the 'head' is always in white gold, it will be a little stronger.

i have a costumer come in about every 3-4 weeks bc her stone is ALWAYS loose!

as for the jeweler not wanting to touch it, thats a little strange. my jeweler will do anything doesnt matter where its from. we also do work for other stores and there are a few types of rings that always have loose stones, even straight from the case!

I would 100 %try another jeweler! My ring was also purchased out of state and I havent had a problem with other jewelers not wanting to help because we didnt buy it there. If the stone became loose after sizing it is definitely possible the sizing caused it to loosen.

bluj786, thank you SO MUCH for this information. If you don't mind, I would love it if you could provide me with your jewelers information via FM, so I can reach out. I am going to go to Good Old Gold in Massapequa Park to talk to them today, but I am not sure where I will get. So any other jeweler would be helpful too! Especially considering that he will work on anything!

Re: Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

I am getting a second opinion tonight. The ring is in fact insured, but I would die if I lost the diamond. I absolutely love the sparkle in the cut and would hate to have to chose something else in its place. :(

Oh and so everyone knows, Argyle was great for everything else, so this is not in any way a post against them. I just have no choice to find somene else, if they cant help me. BOO!

Its good to hear that sometimes stones/settings have a jingle to them. I am fine with it forever, if I could be assured that its REALLY REALLY REALLY secure. Ya know.

Re: Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

I wonder if it has more to do with the fact that it's platinum and not the actual setting? Platinum is a softer metal, so it tends to bend more easily and stones are more likely to come lose or fall out. Maybe you can take it somewhere where they can make the prongs white gold so it's more secure?

My ring is very old (100 years +) with a European cut diamond. It was loose, and I brought it to a jeweler in East Islip, and they did a great job tightening the diamond. FM me for more info. Good luck! :)

Well that is a little odd.. I haven't had to had mine done since I got it fixed last June... Hopefully you will be able to fix this problem once and for all.

Re: Slight E-Ring Issues - HELP!

Thanks for everything ladies. I went to Good Old Gold in Massapequa and they said my stone is only SLIGHTLY loose, but they dont see a problem with the setting at all, thank goodness. AND the jeweler said that it wont actually come out, because its like locked into the setting. So I am happy about that. They offered to tighten it for $20, but I declined for the moment. Since I just got it tightened, but the jeweler initially gave me an issue, they feel that he just did it fast, and never really tightened it appropriately, which is why its a little loose. GOG said that they would tighten it the right way, and I wont have a prolem again...but its not free. My plan is to go in there with FH and look at bands, then mention my 'loose' stone and hope they take care of it for me, for free. Ya know what i'm sayin.. hehe

Regardless, they spoke with me for about a 1/2 hour, about alot of things. I really liked their service and most likely will be buying bands there....that is, if they are resonably priced. I hear they may be a little pricey, but if the service is good, then thats worth it.

Thank you again everyone!!
