Slightly TMI questions about periods and ovulation

For you ladies who know when you're ovulating based on your periods.... what is considered the FIRST DAY of your period? I spot heavily for 3 or 4 days before I actually get my period. Do I start tracking from the day I start spotting or the day I actually get my period??

I you spot heavily then isnt that the start of your period?? Thats my guess... DO you bleed any other time?

It's so weird. I went off the pill in Sept. and nothing is normal anymore

I could 'spot' (I guess maybe light flow) for 3 or 4 days then *BAM* it's flowing for 2 or 3 more. Heavy. So, is the light stuff still the period or is the heavy stuff the start?? I'm confused and I want to be able to track! HELP!!

I have the book 'Taking charge of your Fertility' at home - I will look up this question for you tonight. I believe it is the day you start spotting.

I was never on BC but that is how my periods used to be... they started off light for 2 days then were like OMG here are the floods for another 2 then slowed back down... that was my cycle. Now that I have Emma they are OMG for 2 days and gone

(something to look forward to) plus I dont have cramps.

ANYWAY back to the subject, i would say its the first day you see spotting/light flow.

Then I've screwed up.

Actually, I thought it was different. I thought the first day was when you had full, red flow, not spotting.

In any case, what are you counting too? Are you charting? If you read the Taking Charge of Your Fertility book, you'll see that it's not always the case you ovulate on day 14.

Well, I'm not necessarily TTC yettttt.... (maybe after the wedding in 3 months!!) but I'd like to be able to figure it out. If I brought home a book like that FI would really wonder!!! LOL...

Your first day of red flow is considered cycle day 1

OK - the book I rely on for this stuff is 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' by Toni Weschler.

And about spotting before your period and charting - this is what the book has to say (on page 295):

'Spotting before menstration can be considered normal if it follows at least 10 days of high temperature without spotting....... Day 1 of the cycle is considered the first day of a true mentral cycle'

So I was wrong. You start charting not when you start spotting, but when your period starts. She shows examples of charting this in her book on page 295.
