Oh that's right Jess! I knew there was an 07er in the same boat, but couldn't remember who! I do administrative work in a real estate developing firm. I have been here for 9 years and done tons of different things, so I am open to anything really.

I work in real estate investment banking. We were looking for people a few weeks ago but just filled 2 new positions. I know that there is a shortage of good admins out there. I don't know if you would be willing to work in Manhattan.

Well there is a long story to it, but basically my boss isn't staying, so I am not staying.

I totally agree, hey - 9 years is a long time, I could certainly use the change, I am staying positive! I am getting severence so I am in a great position - but it still hurts emotionaly so much!

Well, like I said above the best thing you can do is start to look everywhere you can... My SIL got her job that she loves from Craig's List and she even gets tutoring jobs from there all the time (she is in the Educational field).

I got my wonderful job from Career Builder and it is hands down, the best job I have ever had... I get bonuses, paid vaca, full medical and dental- it is truly a dream come true so they are out there!!

SO many people find great jobs on sites like that, or in the newspaper, etc... That is why many girls, including myself, recommended places like Craigslist, careerbuilder, monster, etc etc... I know it is going to probably take some time but no matter how you slice it-- it might take time! But you have your severance pay which is great... You can get something quick like waitressing or something to make everyday cash in a short amount of time... You have a ton of options so look at this as an opportunity!! You also have a very reliable track record of working somewhere for 9 years!!

Chin up!! This is meant to be- I believe that and I believe that you will find something better than you had before and you'll love it!!



Just remember all of the people that get jobs from sites like that everyday or just simply from job listings in the Newspaper!

It was meant to be. I believe strongly that EVERYTHING happens for a reason. You are needed somewhere else. Keeps your eyes, ears and heart open to all your options. I know it sounds strange but maybe the universe is trying to tell you something? What are you dreams? What have you DREAMED of being/doing? This is your chance to take a risk! It could be the beginning of a really beautiful new road.

I am so sorry that you lost your job but I just got this gut feeling on reading your post that it was meant to be and you will be so much happier in the long run. I know that we don't know each other and you must think I'm nuts but I just have this feeling. It's crazy...

I LOVE these kinds of posts, it makes me so happy to see that people I barley know are more supportive then companies you have been loyal to for 9 years! They could have found me another position in a different department, but they don't even make the effort. Whatever.......

I agree too, I have been here forever, always looking for more to do, always being overlooked and I am SICK OF IT! I am just happy that I get to leave with severance, that is a great deal of help. I WILL find something better..

Well since you asked, my DREAM job is to be a dolphin trainer! Yea right, never gonna happen, but more realistically I am really interested in party/event planning. I had touched on that in my time here and it was the most enjoyable task over the years. I want to get into that kind of stuff somehow, I just don't know where to begin..

And in the mean time, waitressing or hostessing at night will help hold you over... And you should take your time with job hunting-- don't settle and since you have severance don't say 'oh God, I'd better take the first job I can get'... never said that they didn't work, i said they can take a while...If that is an option then yes, definitely need to use all resources...If someone is looking for a job right away then a recruiter is the way to go...I got a job the next day, and i know people who have gotten it in a week or less...Also if they dont have jobs that you are interested in, they will send you out on temp jobs in the meantime, and the temp jobs don't pay that bad, its $21 an hour.

Just giving more options, which i don't think is a bad idea to have more options available to you...This is not a debate about which method you HAVE to use to get a job, it's about helping her find a job. I just want to let her know that it can take time with those sites, sometimes it gets people even more down when they wait a while and don't hear anything so also wanted to explain why this happens.


But like i said, this thread is about helping her find a job, so i'll go back to that now
