Am I the only one, or do you pregnant ladies avoid cigarette smoke like the plague? I also have asthma, so that's another reason. Many of my friends have wanted to go out for a drink after work, and even though I can just drink a soda, I don't want to go b/c of the smoke. Also, I work in Manhattan and can't stand when I'm walking behind someone who's smoking or when I walk past a building and there's people smoking outside. I've always been this way, but it's worse now that I'm pg.

Re: Smoking
I can TOTALLY understand. I lived in California for 3 years, and I really got used to being in a [vitually] smoke-free state....it was GREAT!
Coming back to NY has been gross when it comes to cigarette smoke. I think that it is worse for a pregnant woman b/c not only do you want to protect your baby [and yourself] from second-hand smoke, but your sense of smell is in a *heightened* state, so it makes it 1,000 times more unpleasant.
Good luck trying to avoid the smoke in restaurants, etc. I feel your pain!

Re: Smoking
I grew up in a home where my dad smokes VERY STRONG cigarettes, and he has since we were born (ugh, imagine the 2nd hand smoke, i've inhaled -even worse than a cigarette) Anyway, it never bothered me until I moved out 2 years ago !) isnt that strange ?? Well it started to bother me the last 1-2 yrs that I was home, being near ANYONE That was smoking, i felt like i couldnt breathe and actually started to get really BOTHERED by any smokers, lol. Of course my dad gets offended and thinks 'we' are brainwashed...'theres more pollution in the air, and youre worried about the smoke ???' . Its funny how you realize it more when you LEAVE it. DH used to always say my clothes smelled like cig, and I would say NO IT DOESNT !!! well now that I go visit my parents, on the way home, my jacket, my clothes, EVERYTHING smells like cigarettes, and my dad has stopped smoking in the house, with all the grandchildren around now (And we had to beg him for that one, he still doesnt see the problem...and beleive me he ADORESSS his grandchildren...)
and NINa, good point about the people in front of the buildings smoking, that should be BANNED period. Im sorry but its DISGUSTING to have to walk into a building and to have to walk through this HORRENDOUS cloud of smoke...YUCK YUCK YUCK. and we have no choice, gotta get in the building !! I used to hold my breathe for that second that I walked in... even my OB office has a group of smokers outside, and it didnt even phase them, when i was prego, that here they are, not opening the door for me, but smoking up the air for my grand entrance...or waddle... LOL
gee, do you think smoke bothers me ????

Re: Smoking
I'm glad you ladies agree with me, I have to add that I work for the Health Department and there are tons of smokers outside the bldg. You'd think that it wouldn't be allowed, just like outside of hospitals, but NOooo!

Re: Smoking
I have to add.. I used to be a smoker (quit yay!!) and when I was I always went out the back door when I smoked (nobody comes in that way). Some people smoke in the front of our building, and I think it is horrible... especially because there is a cancer treatment center upstairs!!!!! When I was a smoker I was very considerate... I don't see how people could be so rude sometimes!
