Re: SMOKING

I quit seven months ago, on Sept 11th. On the 1 year anniversary of the attacks on the WTC, I just decided that life was too valuable to waste on smoking, and threw my pack out. Then I panicked and dug through the garbage to find it To keep me strong, I used Nicorette and highly recommend it. After over 10 years, its the only thing that helped me, that and that I really wanted to quit. FH hates smoking, and I want to be a mom someday so I figure why not quit now and get healthy?? I still miss it though, and I will also be first in line if they ever create a 'healthy' cigarette

Re: SMOKING

I smoke socially, when I'm drinking. I do not take smoke breaks at work nor do I smoke at home. FH HATES it with a seething, flaming passion, so I don't do it that often. Sometimes a girl just needs her smokes....

Marcela, that is what I did. The day I found out that I passed the bar, I handed the pack I had on me to a friend and totally walked away from it. I still have a cigarette ocassionally when I am drinking and hanging aroung with a smoker, but I have not bought a pack since that day.

Congrats Becky

I was going to try to quit before the bar exam, but I knew I wouldn't be able to do it with all the stress that I'm going be under in the next few months. I really hope that when the day comes, I will have your strength and willpower.

Re: SMOKING

I was never a smoker, but my mom and grandmother were. I'm sure I got way too much second-hand smoke in my life-time. My mom quit, my grandmother never got the chance to.
For those that do, I understand it's an addiction, but after watching lung cancer literally **** the life out of my grandmother and watch her die in front of me holding my hand, I can't wait for them to ban smoking all together. I can't take watching anyone else I care about go through what she went through. It also killed a part of us as her family. This is a public forum to voice opinions, so sorry if I offended anyone, but I get offended everytime I try to walk out of my building at work and have to hold my breath b/c of the smokers. It's a filthy and deady habit for those that do it, and for those that have no choice but to breath it.
I hope you all quit and I wish you good luck, I'm sure it's not easy.

Re: SMOKING

shannon...since you brought up the smoking ban...how do you guys feel about it?

I am so for non-smoking bars...but I think that if a bar thinks it will make more moeny with smokers...they should have smoking if they wish...after all it is capitalism...from what I hear from waiters/resses they make more money working the smoking section

Re: SMOKING

I smoked for about 10 years - but I quit cold turkey shortly after my b-day in sept. I had promised my FH I would quit before we got married - but basically told him after I take the bar - well I got a bad cold and had to stop for a few days and then I just never smoked again - I had tried 3 times before to quit but it never lasted more than about 2 weeks.

Re: SMOKING

Good question Yabbo..

I am a smoker, but I completely respect the health and opinions of nonsmokers. I am actually for the ban, although I HATE it for selfish reasons. The bars my DH and I play pool at so far have not banned smoking, and I was just at one last night.

I know it's nuts - but I lost my father to lung cancer - so Shannon I completely understand what you're saying. He died at 48 years old!!!!!!!!! But he also worked in asbestos before they knew it was a carcinogen, so that was the type he had (he was a smoker too though, but quit 2 years before he was diagnosed). I'm so addicted to cigarettes it is scary. And although I have cut down, and I just can't imagine my life without it. I'm very jealous of nonsmokers, and hope to one day be one. Many in my family have died from lung cancer though - on my father's side. And I take after my father in many ways. I know I need to quit - I don't want to die.

Shannon - I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother...may she rest in peace.

Thanks Marni and the same for your Dad. I don't want you or anyone else to die for that matter either!! PLEASE stop smoking!!

Re: SMOKING

Shanon and Marni I understand and agree completely! I never had the slightest desire to be around smokers or to smoke. Now my father is dying of lung cancer with a bone metastasis. It is such a horrible thing and I am so distraught. He is in so much pain and the medications only help so much (never mind the side effects). It's simply terrible watching him die 3 weeks before my wedding. We're hopeful he can attend.

I don't mean to preach and I know everyone is open and fair on these boards but it is one of my deepest desires that everyone stop smoking. I wish you all the best!

Re: SMOKING

Oh Sasha, I am so sorry that you are going through this especially now. I can completely realte and feel for you. It is a terrible disease and it's awful to watch your loved one suffer. I will pray for your father and for you to remain strong. I'm sending you a hug.

Re: SMOKING

Thank you Shanon. No words can describe how it feels but those who have lost loved ones to it understand. Thanks for your thoughts, prayers, and support. The support from others means so much. I hope none of the girls on here will ever have to go through it.
