Re: smoking

My FH quite cold turkey a few summers ago because he knew I hated it. We went on vacation and he knew they wouldn't have his brand so he smoked his last cig at the airport before we departed.

I didn't think he could quit like that but he proved me wrong!

It's better if you stop now then try to stop when you have kids! There will be TONS more stress then that will make you reach for a pack!

Good luck, we're rooting for yoU!!!!

As Marc Twain once said: 'Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because i've done it hundreds of times!'

Seriously though - good luck re-quitting!

Why Should You Stop Smoking?

Improve my personal appearance by eliminating such things as stained teeth and fingers, bad breath, coughing, and smoking
odor on clothes. Prevent wrinkles and keep my skin nice.

Regain my sense of taste and smell, feel more energized and active, sleep better, and eliminate 'hairy tongue' and 'smokers cough' or wheezing.

Regain control of my behavior, gaining a sense of freedom, and owning myself again.

Reduce health risks, such as the risk of heart disease, cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. I do not want a heart attack or to have problems breathing.

Reduce risk to unborn children and provide a healthy environment for children and others living with me.

Save money.

Increase productivity by regaining the time I now spend maintaining my smoking habit.

Avoid possible injury or upset to others by such things as smoking in restaurants or dropping ashes on them.

Effects of Smoking
Short Term:

Hair and clothes smell

Skin wrinkles

Teeth/Fingers stained

Bad breath

Taste buds deadened

Stuffy nose

Reduced sense of smell

Throat is irritated

Increases Blood Pressure

Stress on Heart

Lungs receive less oxygen

Long Term:
Heart Attack

Stroke

Difficulty Breathing

Lung cancer

Re: smoking

hey there I dont post much on this board but this topic caught my attention.
i recently quit smoking. i think it might actually stick this time. it was another 'new years resolution'. ive done this several times before and usually make it 2 weeks and then im back at it. this year was a little easier because i unfortunately had the flu for the first 2-3 weeks of the new year and just the thought of smoking was enough to make me feel worse. so i just threw them away.
to my surprise FH decided to do it too. i was shocked since he smokes A LOT more than i do.
he went on the patches, i went cold turkey. and we still havent smoked..not even a slip!
i totally think anyone can do it. you just have to change the way you think about smoking.
you mentioned its hard to quit because of stress. nothing about cigarettes actually makes dealing with stress easier. but it is the way that smokers choose to cope with stress. so all you really need to do is find another way to cope with the stress. i started exercising more. and i feel awesome!
im not exactly an active person. this is the first time in my life i am exercising on a regular basis. i started off on the treadmill and i could only power walk because i was finding it hard to breathe (due to the smoking). but for the last 2 weeks i have actually been able to jog! for the first time in my life and im almost 28 years old!

another thing that is constantly on my mind is having children and getting pregnant. since i am not getting married until next year and probably not having kids until 2 years after that, i have been worried about being able to conceive. supposedly when a woman turns 30 it is more difficult for her to get pregnant. AND woman over 30 who smoke have an even greater chance of having problems with getting pregnant.
also, FH and I both have had parents with cancer. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and FHs dad passed away from pancreatic cancer when FH was only 9 years old. The pancreatic cancer was directly related to his dads excessive smoking habit. Although my moms breast cancer was not related to smoking, you cant help but think to yourself 'why am i voluntarily putting myself at risk?'. especially after watching her fighting through such a horrible illness.

anyway, just some thoughts. sorry to have gone off on a rant. bottom line is, you really have to want to quit for YOU. thats the only way it will work. also, if your FH smokes, its probably a better idea for you guys to do it together. i never wouldve been able to do it if FH was smoking right in front of me.

Hope this helps you... and goodluck! YOU CAN DO IT!!

Re: smoking

I hear you on the quitting. I have to quit too! but a lot of my friends smoke and it is hard to stay off of it.

What gravity said was great though. to hear it from someone firsthand.

Good luck with quitting!! Keep us posted when you decide on a date to quit! :)
