they were talking about the $5 dollar dance, and i said that I live in western PA, and I have NEVER been to a wedding where this wasn't done...except, they just call it the dollar dance...the DJ plays a song, the guest dance with the bride for like 30 seconds, and give a dollar..or whatever they want....to the MOH who is holding a 'money bag' after the guest is done dancing, the best man gives him/her a shot.. it doesnt last that long..only like 10 mins...its something fun in this area i guess, and like i said, osmething i have seen at everyyyyyyyyyyy wedding...anyway, im just curious in the differences between PA and NY weddings..
so, we do, the dollar dance
I will not have a seating chart (99% of the weddings I go to do not have seating charts)
the bridal party all shares a slow dance together.. for example, MOH dances with BM, 1st BM dances with 1st GM, etc.
i've never been to an engagement party or know anyone that has ever had one.
i never heard of b-pics until i found this site
it's not uncommon for receptions to be thrown in a firehall, and the bride to get all of the decorations. In fact, there are very FEW places that are dedicated just to wedding receptions. I, however, will NOT be in a firehall lol
more times than not, food is buffet style... i was only at 1 wedding where i was served & everyone complained about it
thats all i can think of for right now lol..
NY is wayyyy more classier than PA!

Actually your weddings sound like a lot of fun.
I guess because I've only been to NY weddings....they all kinda blend into each other....

I've only seen people giving money at Greek weddings, and tht is not in a bag, it's usually all over the dance floor.

ohhh, and do you all do that thing where, when you are eating or whatever, if one or 2 guests starts banging on the table or hitting there glasses with a fork or something, eventually all hte other guests join in, then the bride and groom have to kiss? lol

That's so funny. My friend was just telling me she went to a wedding with the $1 dance. I've never ever seen that done .
I think the biggest differences between NY weddings and other states are the cocktail hour and the gifts.
I've never been to a wedding out of state with an elaborate cocktail hour. It's usually cheese and crackers and a few passed things.
Gifts are also so different. In weddings I've been to out of state they give a toaster...in NY you cant show up with less than $300!!!

Yeah, people do the clinky-glass kiss thing here. Not at all weddings, but at some.

as for gifts...if you show up with more than $100 people are impressed hahha... but, i guess things are A LOT cheaper down here as well

I don't think it's always a regional thing. It just depends on the couple. I've never been to a engagement party or heard of people having one either. I'm from NYC. I mean it's great that a lot of ladies get one thrown for them. But I never expected one nor knew of it till I started going on wedding boards.
Definitely NEVER heard of the money dance.
Let's see. I've been to sit down weddings. Buffet weddings. Family style weddings.
I think boudoir pics are a new thing.
Never heard of trash the dress sessions till wedding planning.

ok this should be interesting. I am originally from Israel, so a lot of differences and a lot of same stuff w/NY
- wedding is planned usually 4-6 months. anything more is very rare under special circumstances.
- same CH but I think w/more food even. The CH is before the ceremony. Then the ceremony and after that the reception (this is how I am having it).
- a lot used to be buffet style but lately it became a sit down reception
- everyone today have very very modern looking huppahs that always a designer is hired to do that and the flowers. here for example ppl have very traditional/romantic ones
- mostly ppl stand next to the huppah and just lately the RHs started putting chairs. usually this created a huge mess of ppl and u cant see anything or hear LOL
- ppl come dressed in everything and anything. from very formal to jeans and T-shirts and flanel shirts. so u get guests that are all decked out sitting next to very slobby looking ppl

FH grew up in Illinois right outside Chicago and then lived about 20 min from Dayton, Ohio...he had never heard of having a CH until we started planning our wedding. He asked me why we even needed one and I told him that my family would hunt us down with pitchforks if we didn't have one

i went to college in central PA and most of my friends were originally from PA. I've been to their weddings and they were definitely different. I was very surprised by the first one that I went to......they got married in a church and walked next door to a school gym. they had a buffet for the food, which was cooked by church members and no alcohol. they only had sparkling cider, water, and some sort of punch that they put on the tables. They didn't have a DJ, they brought a desktop computer and speakers to play the music (this was in 2001). this coming from a girl who had only been to weddings on LI....i found it very strange. when i came home and told my mother about it, she said just wait until they come to your wedding, they will be very surprised

I dont know what reading, pa is like, but even where i live in PA, its completelyyyy different than pittsburgh and philly...its not city like AT ALL...the closest shopping mall is about 25mins away, and its not HUGE, farms everywhere, dirt roads, open fields, no traffic--at all, i graduated high school with 150 other students, FH graduated with 140...very small town, lol i think when i visit new york in november im going to be in culture shockkkk...ive never really experienced the city. so im exciteddd
