they were talking about the $5 dollar dance, and i said that I live in western PA, and I have NEVER been to a wedding where this wasn't done...except, they just call it the dollar dance...the DJ plays a song, the guest dance with the bride for like 30 seconds, and give a dollar..or whatever they want....to the MOH who is holding a 'money bag' after the guest is done dancing, the best man gives him/her a shot.. it doesnt last that long..only like 10 mins...its something fun in this area i guess, and like i said, osmething i have seen at everyyyyyyyyyyy wedding...anyway, im just curious in the differences between PA and NY weddings..
so, we do, the dollar dance
I will not have a seating chart (99% of the weddings I go to do not have seating charts)
the bridal party all shares a slow dance together.. for example, MOH dances with BM, 1st BM dances with 1st GM, etc.
i've never been to an engagement party or know anyone that has ever had one.
i never heard of b-pics until i found this site
it's not uncommon for receptions to be thrown in a firehall, and the bride to get all of the decorations. In fact, there are very FEW places that are dedicated just to wedding receptions. I, however, will NOT be in a firehall lol
more times than not, food is buffet style... i was only at 1 wedding where i was served & everyone complained about it
thats all i can think of for right now lol..
NY is wayyyy more classier than PA!

i have a lot of friends from PA since i went to college at penn state....so far i have been to 3 PA weddings ( 1 in Pittsburgh, 1 in Philly, and 1 in Reading)
all 3 were in hotels/nice catering halls
not one of them had the dollar dance
2 had a buffet....1 had sit down dinner
I dont know what reading, pa is like, but even where i live in PA, its completelyyyy different than pittsburgh and philly...its not city like AT ALL...the closest shopping mall is about 25mins away, and its not HUGE, farms everywhere, dirt roads, open fields, no traffic--at all, i graduated high school with 150 other students, FH graduated with 140...very small town, lol i think when i visit new york in november im going to be in culture shockkkk...ive never really experienced the city. so im exciteddd
oh yeah im sure its totally different depending on what part of PA...just like weddings are probably a lot different if u go way upstate NY out of nyc/long island area.

weddings in upstate NY are so completely different too. at least my experience with upstate NY weddings (i'm talking about the Elmira/Binghamton area) are similar to those that I have attended in PA.
I have friends who are from Slickville PA (i'm not sure how close that is to you Nichole), but it's western PA and that wedding was so different from the ones here.

One of my best friend's from college got married in Cleveland, where she is from, and it was different. They are $$$$ but it was just at her parents' country club. CH was actually really good - they had a full sushi bar and string quartet playing, but then the reception itself was different - you didn't get a choice of dinner. Everyone had the filet mignon. And they didn't make a big deal of the cake cutting - they just cut it and put it on a table - and it was a gorgeous cake!!

I don't think it has anything to do with class - its just a matter of traditions or what you are used to.
I would think a dollar dance is 'tacky'...but that doesn't mean that it really is - its just not something that I am used to so that colors my opinion.
My FH is from Northern CT and a lot of his family is from the Boston area, and the majority of weddings there are cash bar. I would die before having a cash bar at my wedding.

Re: So, a post on the '11 board got me thinking...
I have lived in NYC my entire life and as I get older the weddings in NY become more extravagent.
I am in agreement with some of the other girls about boudoir pics are sort of a new thing but then again I could be out of touch. I did not have an engagement party. Sending save the dates became popular in the last 5 years for girls not having destination weddings. When I first saw 'STD' on this site I was confused because I know it as sexally transmited disease...LOL!
Sometimes I wish weddings in VFWs and Firehouses were more popular in NY because I would be saving a boat load of money right now. I have never heard of the dollar dance but like the idea.
