so confused

i have a great uncle who is 102 years old. he lives in an assisted living home which he loves. he has been asking the nurses & my parents recently why he is still living & saying he is depressed.

so today the home called my mom because he has a cold & fluid in his lungs. she had to explain to him about signing a DNR.

i am so confused. i don't know how i am suppose to feel. i love that he is still with us but i feel so bad that he can't enjoy life.

awwww im sorry to hear that!!

however, signing a DNA is probably the best thing he could do (((fh is a nurse & has to talk to patients about this)))

at his age, he his probably very fragile, and if he stops breathing, his ribs will probably just get broken if they try to get him to start breathing again

yea, fh works for a home nursing agency, and he is considered a hospice nurse. therefore, he goes to peoples houses who are in really bad shape, and a lot of them are actively dying. therefore, he has to talk to them about signing a DNR & most people agree b/c otherwise they will just be more miserable once they are revived...if its their time to go, then it's their time, yano?? he will go to a better place & wont have to deal with anymore pain.

its still a sucky situation & it makes reality kick in. im really sorry you have to deal with this. 102 years is a really long time!

I totally understand what your going through. I recently just lost my great Aunt. She was 95, she had been saying for a long time she wanted to 'go', and she had no quality of life.

I understood why she felt that way. When she passed I was sad bc I knew I would always miss her but in a way relieved for her. I am religios I am assuming you are too bc of your church post earlier. I find comfort knowing she is with her siblings who she out lived and know she will always be with me in my heart.

I don't mean to sound at all like your Uncle has already gone. I really just mean it as those mixed feelings I believe are completly normal... all my best...

thank you so much for you kind words. its really appreciated. i have lost many people in my life time (4 grandparents & FFIL) & none of them ever wanted to 'go'. my great uncle is the first who has expressed it & i think thats why i am so confused.

Consider it a gift you can give him to support his decision to 'go'. I was a hospice social worker and this is a very hard thing for people to accept.
