So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....

Original post by prncssrachel

a lot of the intelligence was gathered almost three years ago? I think it just inches my thoughts towards this being a politically motivated 'terror alert'. It's amazing how quickly the Democratic Convention was forgotten after the 'terror alert'. I don't know, maybe I am just reading and hearing things wrong.

Wow, it's really hitting me recently how absolutely horrible a person so many of you think that Bush is.

I hate to break it to you but sometimes there is no conspiracy .

Sometimes there isn't. And sometimes there is.

Some of us feel there is shady stuff going on and some of us don't.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

Yep, I agree with sweetadeline.

I can only look at so many 'coincidences' before I start to wonder.

It's just that everyone who dislikes him calls him a moron at every turn but the person you guys are describing is like some evil genius. It just doesn't mesh in my mind.

Obviously we're all entitled to our own opinions, but I really like to understand other people's as much as possible, it's how I learn (I'm a nerd, it's just a given). This duality just seems odd to me.

Well, it's not so much just Bush, but the whole lot of them. Cheney and Rumsfeld particularly get to me, but there are others who are less high-profile...it's the administration in general, not just Bush, whose protective and patriotic intentions are dubious.

The floor plans of the buildings were from three years ago, not the itellegence. It was also stated that they do not have a time frame of when this would happen, if at all. You can not always beleive what the media says.

It really burns me that they beleive this is politically motivated. If they didn't say anything and the buildings were bombed than it would be the government's fault too. You can't please everyone. People in those effected areas and the NYPD are spending a huge amount of time securing up buildings and making their employees feel safe. I also don't think the president would but a target on the largest group of people that support him - the financial district.

Terrorism is not a cut and dry thing. No one can predict when it will happen but i'm glad they shared the information and let us be alittle more vigilant.

That's kind of my point as well.

I don't blame him entirely for everything that I think the administration has done. I dislike him for a myriad of reasons, however, when it comes to this issue, he's certainly not alone in this. The administration, under his 'leadership', is who I have issues with.

First of all, who is 'they'? The people posting in this thread? You don't need to refer to us as 'they' or 'them.'

Second, of course he's going to put a target on his greatest supporters...so that when he saves the day, it validates their support.

And how exactly are they letting us be more vigilant? The federal government expects us to beef up security and take all these extra precautions to safeguard the city, but is not providing any additional funding to do so. It's coming out of our pockets, and I would very much like to know where my money is going and for what purpose.

Re: So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....

I do believe that millions of dollars would be wasted because look at Iraq- how many millions have we wasted finding weapons of mass destruction that don't exist? Just to leave a vast power vacuum that we cannot control?

And yes, Kerry did not receive a huge bump from the DNC- not like it's a surprise as most of the conservative controled media only issued soundbites or had their own commentary putting the 'Bush' spin on everything said- to listen to the message of the convention without any right wing spin, one would have had to do so via C-Span- and I'm sure hardly anyone on this site- me included- knows what channel that is. Lets see how much spin the RNC gets- probably none- since all the media- thanks to Bush- is controlled by the right.

so while I do feel it's cynical that we would think an increase in terror vigiliance is totally political, I have to say, I don't think our feelings are unwarranted based on Bush's, Rove's, and Ashcroft's behavior.

I think Bush is a liar and a crook and an insult to real Christians everywhere both now as a President and in the past both in his political and private life- and I don't care if it is disrespectful or not to say so.

Re: So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....

My feelings about all of this has nothing to do with thinking Bush is 'evil'. And I don't even think it has anything to do with WHO is in office. I just think this is the way our country operates. We may never know what is REALLY going on with terror threats, but that's fine. If the government is doing its job properly, we SHOULDN'T know too much. But I stand by the opinion that these latest alerts were in part political. And I do not think that I am being offensive by saying so. EVERYTHING that goes on with the government has a political undermeaning. I don't care who it is in politics, but especially in an election year, and so close to election time, you couldn't make me think otherwise. And just because I think this does NOT mean that I don't think they care about our safety. Of course they do. What happened on 9/11 was awful and should never again have to happen, and I do not think that anyone would want to take the chance of it happening again, but I think this business with terror 'alerts' makes it seem like MORE is being done than really is. The fact of the matter is, if a terrorist wants to blow something up, they will regardless of the type of security there is. It's sad and scary and upsetting, but it's reality.

Re: So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....

I have to say I am truly bothered by the amount of people-and not just on this site, people in general-who feel that this was politically motivated.

I am not a fan of W. I think he's made many mistakes during his presidency and I think he's mislead the public during the last 3+ years. I don't like his administration-with the exception of Rice and Powell. But I have to say at some point the guy deserves a break. I mean what do people want him to do? Should he not warn us? Should he ignore old warnings and old evidence even though 9/11 was planned years before the attack took place? What should he do? They received credible evidence that made them believe an attack is planned and may occur between now and November. I never heard in any report that they heard it was going to happen on Monday. If that's what they heard why would they raise the alert until November?

What happened on 9/11 was a terrible tragedy. It was not Clinton's fault. It was not Bush's fault. It was beyond our worst nightmare as a country. Think back to before 9/11 and try to imagine this. If Bush came on t.v. the night before and said we have evidence that there will be an attack against our country tomorrow, how many of you would have believed him? I know I wouldn't of. I would have thought wow, how many drugs did this guy do in college? An attack against us? No way. It could never happen. We find it easier to point out all of his flaws now and to say he should have done this and he should have done that because we can look back on it now and it seems so obvious to us. But the truth is we as a country were very naive before 9/11 and we never would have accepted these warnings. Yet Bush got ripped apart for not warning us. So now he warns us. He tries to tell us be on the lookout because we feel your life may be in danger. Protect your country and report suspicious activities. And people say he's doing it because Kerry had the convention last week? Last I checked most experts felt that Kerry did not do well at the convention, so why would Bush feel the need to do that now?

I am a huge conspiracy believer. I have tons of books on them. But I just don't see it here. There is no gain in waiting to release these terror warnings. Am I suppose to believe that Bush did this so that more people would vote for him? Why would this cause me to vote for him? I had very little intentions of voting for him before these warnings and I have very little intentions of voting for him now. He doesn't gain votes by warning Americans that their life is in danger. If anything it would have more of a negative effect on him because people feel why do I want him in office, he can't keep us safe.

I think at some point you have to stop looking at things through you're parties eyes and through the media's eyes in order to make your own choice. I for one got very tired of the media telling me what I should and should not believe so I choose to ignore them and do my own research. I also got tired of hearing my party-which is democrat-telling me I had to think and feel a certain way about the affairs of the country and the world. It doesn't have to be that way. That's what this country thrives on...choice.

Re: So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....

You've made a great deal of assumptions about what 'we' as a country believe and that we're only viewing these issues with Democratic eyes. Suffice to say, I would have been more likely to believe Bush before 9/11 because it would have shown that the government was looking out for us. Now, I know that he failed to deal with information that was in front of his face. Nobody is saying that there isn't truth to these threats. No one is saying that we shouldn't be cautious as a nation and be on alert.

That being said, I have been hearing about the threats to do something to destroy our elections in November for quite some time. Ridge keeps defending the 'old' information by saying that it was updated in January. So again, I can't help but wonder why the terror level was raised now. Yes, they claim that they just found out that it was imminent from the detainee. We will never know. What I do know is that this is an election year, and regardless of whether he is Republican or Democrat, Bush's past has lead me to be distrustful. If Kerry is elected and pulls this same sh*t, I will feel the same way.

Again, it's an election year, and every word that comes out of the President's mouth will be carefully crafted to get him re-elected, and every word out of Kerry's mouth will be carefully crafted to get him elected. But Bush is in the White House and HIS administration has earned my distrust and I am cautious about simply accepting information that comes from the administration as the truth.

I don't see anyone who feels that this is a political issue telling the people who don't feel that way that they are wrong, they are offensive, or that they believe things they don't. These are our opinions. Please don't admonish us for them, as we have not admonished anyone else for theirs.

I am not saying that anyone's opinions are wrong. Please show me in my post where I have said that. What I am asking is what do people want Bush to do? Should he not warn us and hope that these threats don't turn out to be real? What political gain does he have on waiting to release this news since January? And I never accused anyone of saying that they think we shouldn't be cautious as a nation.

I am not assuming anything on this country. I am pointing out things I have heard and read for months. And I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that people would have believed Bush before 9/11 if he warned us.

Politicans lie. That's part of their job. If it's not Bush doing it it would just be somebody else.

Why in the world would anyone not believe the President if he had warned us of attacks before 9/11? It is not like terror threats were an everyday occurance in this country 3 years ago. The fact of the matter is if a president has information pertaining to public safety it should be made public when he finds out about it, not months later...bottom line.

I never said you said we were wrong. I was making a point. I did, however, ask you not to admonish us, which is what you did.

As far as you finding it hard to believe what I said about believing Bush prior to 9/11, now you know how I feel about anything terror-related he says. I find it hard to believe.

And it's a sad commentary when we just accept the fact that politicians lie. It's not part of their job and I refuse to accept that as the way it is or should be.

I And I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that people would have believed Bush before 9/11 if he warned us.

See now, I would be more inclined to have believed him before hand.

It just scares me that we ignored these things up until 9/11.

I am not a political person. I hardly ever have discussions regarding political issues, blah, blah and I don't claim to know about things that I really have no clue about...but this is something that really is upsetting me. And I am very glad to see that I am not the only one. I am terrified of what the future of this country will turn out to be. I sometimes feel like we are spiraling towards a very ironic fate of biting ourselves in the a$$es. I feel like there are three sectors in American society: The Government, The Media and Us. Each one feeds off the other, yet no one is working towards a common goal, and that is scary. I don't know who to trust anymore. I turn on the tv and hear all this scary stuff....but is it true? Or do they just want the ratings? I listen to the President and other gov't officials talk about terror alerts and wars and what they think is best for the counrty....but do they really mean what they say? Or are they just trying to serve another term or fill some other agenda that we don't know about? I just hate the feeling of being powerless and led by people I didn't elect and people I don't trust. I don't know how much this has to do with what I originally posted, but I suspect these feelings are the reason I am SO cynical towards these terror alerts and color coded ways of life.

pack his bags and leave town

What political gain does he have on waiting to release this news since January?

diverting attention from other things, get the 'bush talk' going again - case and point.

Politicans lie. That's part of their job. If it's not Bush doing it it would just be somebody else.

unfortunately this is true for the most part but it is NOT a job requirement. i'd rather have someone smart and capable lying to me than ignorant and mean spirited.

anyone who addresses his base as 'the haves and the have mores' does NOT represent me and the average american...

A few thoughts...

1) I agree the timing is questionable.. why so soon after the convention? Kerry proved himself to be 'presidental' and his approval rating are higher than Bush's.. things that make you go hmmm.. considering most of the info is old..not all but most..

2) I also see the point, that the Bush camp is damned if they do, damned if they dont.. either way they have to err on the side of caution rather..

3) Honestly, something is going to happen.. and predicting when, if, how.. is near impossible.. the mother of all 'lucky breaks' is probably the only thing that can stop if from happening.. these terror groups WANT to prove they can hurt us again, that 9/11 wasn't a one time deal.. it's scary and nerve racking to think about..but my gut tells me it's gonna happen..

Actually, Kerry's approval ratings dropped after the convention, leaving him either lower than or tied with Bush (depends on the poll).
