So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....
Original post by prncssrachel
a lot of the intelligence was gathered almost three years ago? I think it just inches my thoughts towards this being a politically motivated 'terror alert'. It's amazing how quickly the Democratic Convention was forgotten after the 'terror alert'. I don't know, maybe I am just reading and hearing things wrong.

The problems with polls is that they are often conflicting. Many people via the media have 'approved' of Kerry's performance at the DC....this has been misread (by the journalists, and not by us, the viewers) as a jump in overall approval....it is not the same thing. Depending on the slant of the reporting meduim, the results of the polls are reported differently.
Also, another major factor in this whole question of timing and credible reporting and so forth is the fact that the media is deregulated, and has been for quite a few years. Since that deregulation, a few media giants have emerged and essentially four companies control all mainstream media. This is only relevant because it has taken several years to slowly turn, and was done in such a manner that viewers (and readers) have essentially changed with it. It was done in such a subtle way, that the slant is given through a party's eyes, even if we do not always see it, and even if we ourselves do not consciously view things as a 'memeber' of a certain party, we still may be effected by it. Granted many times it is blatant, but there are certain news shows and papers who are very subtle in slipping political nuances into 'factual' reporting.
The only time I can see the president being intensely involved is if there is a question of FCC compliance, or if the media/publishing company is invested in the presidency (as a special interest). This si not supposed to happen, but unfortunately it sometimes does.

A few thoughts...
1) I agree the timing is questionable.. why so soon after the convention? Kerry proved himself to be 'presidental' and his approval rating are higher than Bush's.. things that make you go hmmm.. considering most of the info is old..not all but most..
Actually, Kerry's approval ratings dropped after the convention, leaving him either lower than or tied with Bush (depends on the poll).
Key words. depends on the poll.. lol Some said he was higher some said lower.. who knows what to believe..

Here's the basic problem in this country. We live in a democracy. And all we need is 51% of the people to want something and that's what goes in this country. The problem comes for a person when they are in the lower percentage of the vote and they don't get the choice they wanted.
For Bush he was doomed in this presidency before he was even sworn in. The race was too close, he was not what a huge portion of this country wanted. His entire presidency has been questioned more then any other president that I can remember and in many cases rightly so. He was then dealt one of the worst hands a president could be dealt. While his actions right after 9/11 were great he soon showed his faults and his weaknesses.
For every issue that one person wants solved another doesn't want it solved. We vote to put a person in office that we feel represents what we want individually. But sometimes the president doesn't come through in the way we want them to. Even the 'great' presidents over the years have failed in some aspects and have had their moments where the country thought they were making a poor decision.
I don't mean to disrespect anyone but I really find it very hard to believe that people would have believed Bush if he warned us before 9/11. It's much easier to look back now and say we would have believed him because we now know that he would have been telling us the truth. But prior to 9/11 I just don't see people taking him seriously. Unless he had specific threats, which he didn't.

Exactly. Once again the media gives us the story that they want to report. Which is why I try to ignore these polls.

MAybe I am in the minority here, but before 9/11 I ALWAYS wondered what stopped people from driving car bombs into buildings here. My father and I used to talk about it BEFORE 9/11, how it would be so easy for someone to do something like that here becuase we weren't expecting it. So YES..I DEFINITELY would have believed it if they said it.

It just scares me that we ignored these things up until 9/11.
It scares me as well but as a country, not just Bush as a president, we did ignore these things. We never thought that we could be attacked, especially in the way that we were. Let's just hope that whoever the next president is they figure out a way to make this country safe.

After the '93 WTC bombing, it was clear to many that something could happen again. Osama was active here and overseas for years before 9/11, so where were the color-coded terrorism ratings on 9/10/01? Bush's administration has earned the distrust of many in this country and throughout the world b/c they have a f*** you attitute to those who are not for their interests, that is a divisive way to 'lead' this country.

I thought about it as well. As a matter of fact my mom said to me right after 9/11 that I had been predicting it for years. I also said that if anyone ever wanted to harm this country they would bomb the twin towers. I pointed out how vulnerable we were. But the harm that I thought about would hurt a couple of hundred people, not 3,000 and it surely would not have taken down the twin towers. And I would think about domestic terrorists, like McVeigh, not international.

What about the 8 years Clinton was in office? Why didn't he implement some sort of system if he knew that Osama was active here.

I think it's safe to say that NO ONE did their job in that area after the first WTC bombing. Sick, isn't it?

Yes it is. It's a shame that this country didn't act on a lot of warnings. The Cole bombing too. Let's just hope that the government has learned it's lesson and can now get its act together. I wish the country and the government wasn't so divided into Republicans and Democrats and that a choice could be made based on what's best for the country not what makes a party happy.

I'm not so sure that the counrty WANTS to be divided into Republicans and Democrats. THAT sucks. I don't really identify with either, but it seems like you have to choose the lesser of two evils because it's not like an independent has a chance of winning.

i 100% agree. That's why I'm really thinking about voting for Nader. I know he wont win but I can't see myself giving either Bush or Kerry my vote at this point. I am so tired of only having 2 parties. I want another serious choice.

Osama has been on the most wanted list for years. Both administrations have tried to get him, that's not the issue here. But what comes of color-coding our terrorist threat level and making a field day out of it in the media? If we're all aware of the world we live in, it should be no surprise that we currently risk terrorist attack and have for years. I don't need a fluctuating color system to remember it, I just need to be vigilant and hope my gov't has our best interest as their focus, not their best interest. So what is the point? To cover the a**es of the Bush administration, b/c if God forbid something happens again and they hadn't raises the red flags, would he be elected again in November?

Re: So how do you feel about the terror alerts now that we know.....
Because a lot of people are not aware of it. We are all very sensitive to it in NY. But there are many other states that are filled with people who don't hear as much about threats and aren't scared of it because it didn't hit them as hard.
