I have been procastinating because I am terrified to fly. Now when I say terrified I mean like there is no way Im getting on this plane type scared. From the day Tom proposed the first thought that came into my mind was How am I gonna get on a plane?, most think oK where am I gonna have my wedding or I cant wait to go shopping for my dress, nope not me. My question is does anyone else have a fear and how can I get over it? DO you think if I go to the dr they can give me something?

Valium. Just get it. It will work wonders! I do believe a doctor can prescribe you a small dosage if you ask.

And congratulations for booking your honeymoon!
I definitely do NOT recommend you drink any alcohol (like some people I know have done) before you get on the plane. You don't want to get sick.

Originally my boss was giving me his time share and I just couldnt handle the flight, I was afraid that if I didnt get on the plane then his money would be wasted so I jus thanked him and explained and he understood. FH grandmother owns a condo in south beach so we are going to go their instead. I figured I can suck it up for 2 hours but now that I have tix it all seems more real. But I will make an appt with the Dr and see what he can do for me! Thanks so much girls, now that I know i have options I feel a bit better.

i was going to suggest a few months of cognitive behavioral therapy, which is when a therapist helps you conquer your fear by gradual exposure to what you're afraid of... but i realize you don't have much time left! so i would still recommend seeing a psychiatrist, but just for a few sessions, so that he/she can teach you some relaxation techniques and talk you through your plane trip a little. he can also prescribe you some meds to relax you.
(make sure you are seeing an psychiatrist, not a psychologist, because only MDs can prescribe meds)

I totally understand your fear of flying because I have been afraid of flying for years. The way that I got over it (or at least became able to get on a plane) was by just doing it. I have to fly for work, so I had to get over it. Xanax also helps quit a bit. Definitely speak to your doctor and see what he/she can do.

Im definitly gonna make an appt. Cant this weekend, just found out FH uncle passed away, so Im gonna be in jersey this weekend. My fear stems from when I was 7. Comimg home from Fl one of the engines failed and they couldnt get the wheels down. From then on in I would never get on another plane again, and havent. Thank GOD i dont have to f ly for business or I would probably quit! FH just went away for business and I cried the whole time he was on the plane. I sat at my desk at work and tracked his flight Im so crazy! FH says I should ask for a morphine drip, Other thing is, on Zanak Xanax however you spell it, are you still in control? Like godforbid something were to happen I wanna be able to react ya know. I am forever thinking the worst case scenarios, lol!

umm... i'm not sure if fh was kidding or not, but just in case he wasn't, morphine is definitely not the way to go in this case Xanax would be fine, as well as valium or ativan... all do basically the same thing. they will make you relaxed, but not unable to react, so don't worry! the only thing i would recommend is fiddling around with the dosage before flying, because too big a dose will put you right to sleep. you want just enough to relax you. don't worry, you'll be okay!

I understand. One of my friends told me once that I had to make a choice. I could either give into my fear and spend my whole life in NY or I could try to get over it so that I could see the rest of the world. While it is still very difficult for me to fly, I pretty much grit my teeth and bear it.
Yes, you are still in control. You just feel more relaxed. Speak to your doctor though, he might have other suggestions.

I would recommend Zanax!
You are in total control so don’t worry about that. It just relaxes you. There’s no jitters or bad side effect. It really puts you in a good mood. It's mostly prescribed as an anti-depressant so you just stay happy .
What airlines are you flying?
Zanax comes in 'sticks' & can be split up into 4 separate pieces so you can take 1/4 in the car to the AP & see how you feel. If you still feel a bit uneasy you can take another 1/4. That should do the trick. You will also have enough for the plane ride home. More than 1/2 will probably put you to sleep. It's actually a great sleeping pill if taken that way too!

We are flying Southwest, i have never flown with them before last flight was Delta, but I heard that you have to get there crazy early b/c there is no assigned seating.

I can really relate to you on this! I am super scared to fly! I have flown many times, including overseas by myself, buy I haven't actually flown since 7/2001. After 9/11 my fear of flying obviously increased. I dream about flying all the time. I even considered taking a cruise out of NY so I could avoid flying (last year we actually DID take a cruise out of NY and by the way..it was great!). I will have to fly for my job soon too. So far I've swindled myself out of it... I actually mentioned it to my doctor a few years back when I flew to Italy by myself. He suggested taking an over the counter sleep aid. It didn't work for me though. I was up the whole time. I actually got tears in my eyes as we were taking off. The take off and the first 15 mins. is what scares me. Anyway...I wish I was normal like other people who fly with no problem! I think we have to just do it! If you want you can FM me anytime. Believe me, I understand.

Thank you!! I really appreciate it! FH just doesnt get it! He thinks Im being a baby, but its so deep that I try to avoid it when ever possible. But I will suck it up and i will probably be in tears on teh whole flight!

Oh...and guess what? I haven't booked my plane tickets yet! I can't quite get myself to do it. I have it on my list of things to do, and I keep looking up prices. I'm going to book the flight tonight!

LOL Im so with ya on that one. Ill be married in ummmm 23 days and just did it today. Tom was like UHHH Jenn are we going on a HM?? I got mad and was like you wanna go so bad book em yourself! He looked at me like I was a psycho! I had to then explain where my outburst stemmed from so he made me book them. lol
I should add that right after he said if I really couldnt get on the plane that he would drive there just to make sure i dont have a psychotic episode on the plane! 2 days in a car with him singing...no thanks, ill take my chances with the plane

If you take a look on amazon there are hypnosis tapes/CDs available for people who are really scared of flying. Search for 'hypnosis fear of flying' or something like that. My grandma used these before a flight to Alaska and she is terrified of flying--they really did help her. Even if you're able to get medication this should give it a little boost because it'll prepare you mentally. Good luck!

OMG--this is exactly what I said when my friends/FH offered to get me meds for the plane! I'm glad to hear that Xanax still keeps you in control though. I didn't fly until I was 20 and I think I've flown a total of 10 times since then (including round trips).
I'm not 'awful' on a plane, but I do freak out during takeoff until we get to cruising altitude, during landing, and whenever there are any sudden changes in altitude. I usually need someone sitting next to me who can explain what's going on and let me hold their hand. Not easy when you're traveling for work I have another business trip coming up in a few weeks so I think I'm going to look into getting Xanax.
