My FI is from Ohio (Cleveland area) and no, they don't make the kind of money there that people in NY make. Also.... 250,000 is considered 'pricey' there.

About a year ago we actually looked into relocating back to OH so that I could go to school full-time without having to worry about working (a 60,000 salary could have easily supported us). We saw waterfront homes (Lake Erie) for under 230,000. Most homes went for about 150,000.

Also, you don't make nearly as much on property investments there as you do on the East Coast. For example, my parents bought a 4 bedroom split level ranch in Watermill in 2000 for 360,000 (I know - unbelievable, even the real estate agent was amazed at the incredible buy). The house is now worth about 1 million dollars (their neighbor's house just sold for 1.2 million). My FI's parents purchased their 4 bedroom home in the early 70's for about 15,000 - it's now worth about 120,000.

Crazy..... but true.

I hear ya! My mom bought a gorgeous 3br 2 bath house with a 2 car garage and a nice backyard for 140K in Phoenix, AZ. NY is just insane. Her mortgage is the same as what she pays in rent for a tiny 2 br in Brooklyn.

Its probably a new construction and they haven't put down the lawn yet.

Yeah you can get houses cheaper outside of NY... but remember salaries are also MUCH cheaper too.
