So Kerry can dish it but can not take it...

So Kerry can dish it but can not take it...

Documentary on Kerry to be aired...the Kerry folks are having a sh*$ fit! Evidently it does not expose him in the greatest light.

Unfortunately NY does not get the station I don't think. I think Maryland, Wahington, PA get it.

ETA: I still don't agree w/ biased journalism no matter who's side it's on (although, it's a little more legit when a news station is airing it). I just find it funny that the whole camp is getting their panties in a bunch.

Actually, my understanding is that is is not a documentary, but a bit of propaganda. What is upsetting to Kerry's camp is that this piece, which is acknowledged widely by republicans not to be a documentary (but a long version Swift Boat ad, called ' 'Wounds that never heal') is only being shown on one person's (one person owns) vast media network...he is an avowed right winger/stark conservative and ignoring equal time laws with this by terming it a documentary. The fact that one person who is a media mogul can own this many stations and simply is too rich to care about equal time rules and air this propaganda on all of these stations in swing states is what many find appaling.

Okay, so this one is a right winger, Moore is a left winger. Are you saying that a bunch of military veterans are liars with not so much as listening to what they have to say because, God forbid, they differ from your point of view? Don't they have just as much right to air their opinion as the librals? I don't know how legit it is until I see it...which I don't think it is being played in NY. I termed it documentary because that is what Newsday deemed it.

I just think, that among all fo the other things I think about it, that if they won't allow Fahrenhaeit 9/11, they shouldnt allow this. They have to at least PRETEND to be fair.

well, those military veterans are saying that Kerry, who is also a military veteran is a liar.

when bush was running in the 2000 election, he called McCain, who is also a miliatry veteran a liar.

So that logic doesn't hold... especially for Republicans- if you are a veteran- you don't necessarily need to be trusted.

I think you're missing the point- the point isn't the content- but the fact that this is indeed NOT a documentary- any more so than Far. 911 wasn't a documentary. Whereas one was a movie that you paid to see, this is being aired as fact on a television network.

And Moore is actually TRYING to get people to air FH 9/11 on network TV, he gave up his oscar nomination for it, but NO ONE will play that on TV. It's a double standard. and what is shown on TV especially as a 'documentary' can have a HUGE effec ton people. The average shmuck sititng in front of his TV doens't know anything about media bias, and believes was he sees on the 'news'...soo... it can ahve a veyr big, unfair effect, IMHO, because you can easily air something critical of Shrub, but no one's doing it.

This 'documentary' is being aired by a man who owns tv stations in certain states and is only being shown in those states. He is a friend of bush. And the fact that it is being aired right on the heels of election day is ridiculous!!

I don't really care what ten men have to say in all honesty!! To me ANY man or woman that served in the military at any point in their life is a hero to me!!

Do you know how much dirt there is about George Bush that gets swept under the covers?? Point being- nobody is perfect and people change!! The past is the past. I do not really care what John Kerry did back then, I am concerned with what is is capable and willing to do for our country today!!

I agree, boop. It really disgusts me that there people are trying to tarnish his war record. Whetehr you like him or not, he DID fight in Vietnam, and I'm sure we all know people who did as well and all of the horrors that they ahve expereinced, and so why would you put people through the indignity of questioning thier war record.

IMO it's all politically motivated, and even if they weren't, they don't liek Kerry because they have their panties in a bunch over him protesting the war, which IMO was a very noble thing to do, but some peopl don't see it that way.

Regardless of who you support there is nothing funny about this. This is setting a terrifying precedent -- that a media mogul can air a propoganda film (it doesn't matter whether it is a left-wing film or a right-wing film) on stations he owns without any equal time provisions. On public airwaves no less (this is not cable). This is scary, no matter who you support.

To be clear, I thought F 9/11 was also propaganda -- no doubt about it. My sole point was that we do have laws regarding equal time in the US and if you air a political piece for one, you are obligated to show equal time. I think it is incredulous, regardless of who you support, not to be concerned about the fact that either party, left or right, has the right to so remarkably ignore the rules. That is why there are regulations to prevent monopolies in this country's industries. It is simply the point that one person should not be able to, by mere virtue of having money, and a media outlet, have the ability to propagandize before an election, democrat or republican.

Regardless of your political view, it would be nice to read something that didn't have negative connotations in every sentence. We're all entitled to our own opinions, and should be able to express them in a mature manner with out any attacks.... Therefore, I will keep my opinion to myself.

i agree completely. although it's what we've seen in both the presidential and vice-presidential debates, debate amongst ourselves doesn't have to mean bashing. i think it should be possible to have a healthy political debate without being negative or insulting. JMO.

I saw the commercial for it this weekend. It said 'Not Endorsed by Any Party'.

Ladies, I further completely agree...we need not shy away from topics we believe in but I do think respect for all opinions is the rule of the day!

Re: So Kerry can dish it but can not take it...

I don't know what the exact rules say, bu all candidates are supposed to have equal time on TV. I just think it's totally wrong,a nd to say it's not endorsed by any party is just more BS. You don;t have to be endorsed by any party to back them. I don't see this guy stepping up to put another 'documentary' on TV about how great kerry is or how bad bush is. I have no roblem with people making or watching these fi;ms, I just think network TV has a responsibility, amd I think a legal one too, to keep it as fair as possibkle

Re: So Kerry can dish it but can not take it...

Without hoping to seem pedantic, an explanation may be helpful. While the group that made that documentary is indeed NOT affiliated with either party, they are what is broadly termed a '527' which refers to
Section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code which sets forth the very limited circumstances under which a political organization may be required to pay federal tax. The key to a 527, however, is not the tax rules that apply to it, but the campaign finance laws that DO NOT apply to it.

To be more precise, the campaign finance laws don't apply to one particular kind of 527. Political Action Committees or 'PACs' and some other political entities are 527s, but they are subject to campaign finance restrictions. In contrast, there are non-PAC 527s like Swift Boat Veterans for Truth or 'America Coming Together' (a pro-Democratic group), which, as of this writing, are not subject to such restrictions.

Under the current interpretation of the laws governing federal elections, a political organization can raise and spend unlimited sums of money if it fits two criteria: First, it must raise money only from individuals (as opposed to raising so-called 'soft money' from corporations and unions). Second, it cannot coordinate its activities with the candidates or parties.

Thus, while an individual billionaire can give no more than $2,000 to Bush or Kerry, he can give millions to Swift Boat Veterans or America Coming Together. And unlike an organization that receives soft money funding from unions or corporations, a 527 is free to run as many political advertisements as it wants, as close to the election as it wants, as long as it doesn't coordinate its activities with the official campaigns.

So the part about there not being an allegience to either party is true. What is more troubling is that the behavior of these unregulated groups are kept, to an extent, in check, by the rules affecting broadcast media. That is why someone like Rupert Murdoch is not personally able to affect the election by running 24/7 pieces on his chosen candidate on Fox all day. The point of this all is that this one man, Sinclair Boradcasting's owner, has decided to air these with NO EQUAL TIME for any response, and that simply violates both election rules and the spirit they are written in.
That, IMO, is the point. HTH.
