so my honeymoon will STINK!!!....

I have fair skin and since i was, well BORN my mom has kept me out of the sun, always had a hat and sunglasses and GLOPPED the sunblock

Well now that I'm a big girl and can take care of myself IM FAILING!!

We went to Disney this past fall..and two days later (with spf45) i broke out in hives...anywhere my tanktop and capris didnt cover!
so after a few tears of morbid embarassment and kids asking their mommy what was wrong with me.....i was able to get control.
well....again 45 on sat and sun i am BURNT to no end...and my arms are COVERED in hives......it was better...but from diriving to work, the sun made it totally come out again.

My question is: how do i spent 10 days in St Lucia?!??!?!

It may not be sunburn, it may actually be an allergy to sunblock ingredients. The higher the SPF the more chemicals in them. Have you been to a dermatologist? I am allergic to a specific ingredient in most sunsreens that produces a rash, not a sunburn, if I put them on. I discovered it the hard way. If that's not the case, then you could always lay under an umbrella on the beach-sorry

I, too, have pale skin (hence the name ) and I get terrile sunburn from any time outside. I dont' get hives though, so I can't tell you about that (sorry)
We spent our honeymoon in St. Lucia in April and I used sunblock everyday and I had almost no color when I came back. IT was very odd - normally, if i spent that much time out in the sun, even with sunblock, it would eventually wear off and i would burn...but i got very little color.

in fact, i'm a teacher, and after my honeymoon, when i was back in school, i found a note that a student was passing in class that said 'I thought she said she went on a honeymoon, why isn't she tan?'

so you may not have to worry about the sun in st. lucia.

My mom is allergic to the sun, if she doesn't wear sunscreen she gets these bumps that look like hives, I would really try to go see a dermatologist, I see a really good one in Mineola if you need the info send me a FM

i would definitely go to the dermatologist and see what they say - perhaps you have a condition that the sunblock brought out in your skin....
good luck!!!!

p.s.
(i thought the note about my paleness was pretty funny too )

I have heard of this too! I've also heard you can make yourself used to the sun, and eliminate the allergy - not sure if that's true, but since you're already going to the dermatologist, you might as well ask.

You're defintely having an allergic reaction to the suntan lotion. Go to your doctor to be sure but you may have to use an all natural sun screen. I know people with this problem. Actually BCTM33 should be able to help you if you FM her. She's allergic to sunblock. As for St. Lucian sun...I'll let my honeymoon pictures speak for themselves. be careful!!

Re: so my honeymoon will STINK!!!....

I don't know about being allergic to sunblock, I'm not, but after being in the sun for a few days, I get a terrible rash/hives/bumps/blisters on my chest (usually) and they tend to go away as soon as I am out of the sun. They mostly itch and burn, and they come back as soon as I go out in the sun again. Your derm should be able to help you.

My suggestion would be moderate sun and a LOT of shade!!!!

I slowly, very slowly pre-tanned at the tanning salon to build up a base... and then when i was there STILL slathered on the lotion.

I too am pale as can be and burn like crazy in the sun. AND, as an added bonus, I get horrible rashes from regular sunscreen that can be worse than the sunburn!

I stay in the shade as much as possible (and I live in Seattle, so it is easy when I am here...), and when i am going to be in sun I use 'physical block' sunblocks rather than the regular 'chemical block' kind. The physical blocks have ingredients like titanium dioxide.

Clinique City Block is one (small tubes - good for your face and under makeup), and I have another really good one that I got at Sephora (I forget the name). The downside of these sunblocks, though, is that 1. they are not waterproof, 2. if you don't rub in REALLY well, they make you look paler than you already are, and 3. they are more expensive than the other stuff. On the upside, they are really good for your skin and some of them smell nice. I got the suff on my clothes and thought I totally ruined them, but, it completely washed out.

Good luck!!!!!

I feel your pain - date twin.

I also have very light and sensitive skin and get a heat rash on my arms in the summer.

My advice is to stay in the shade as much as possible. Last time I went to the Caribbean I used Neutrogena with a very high SPF. I think it was higher than 45.

maybe you should give that a try. If that doesn't work, try one of those high end sunscreens.

good luck

OUCH!!!!!!!!!! that looked painful! One of my 1st trips to the Caribbean I got sun poisoning and was absolutely miserable for the rest of the trip

I hate being pale.

You could have sun poisoning....little red and itchy bumps and blotches. I get it when I have not been in the sun and am exposed to the sun for a long period of time. Especially if I go to the carribean.
I would suggest that you get a tan either by tanning salon or sitting in the sun with sunblock and not for too long before you go. But seeing that i think you are getting married in Nov. The tanning salon will probably be your best bet. Also when you are in the sun make sure you are always reapplying. When I forget to reapply even if I dont get burnt I get sun poisoning.
I am going to St Lucia and I have been going to the tanning salon so I have a base tan so I hopefully wont have to worry.

In addition to a possible allergic reaction and seeing a derm. are you on BCP? If so, this makes you highly sensitive to the sun and has caused me to break out in horrible rashes...I plan on getting off the pill, but until then, I too shall suffer the heat's wrath!

This happened to me at the end of my trip in St. Lucia this past april! It was awful. Try to use stronger sunscreen, and stay under the umbrellas or shade for part of the day.

Re: so my honeymoon will STINK!!!....

Yeah, sounds like heat rash. I get it any time I am in the sun on vacation. Very inconvenient. I never have too much of a problem with the sun here though, prob because it's not as strong.

I have been to the dermatologist for it. She recommended that I stay out of the sun (obvious- she's a dermatologist, and let's face it- sun is bad for your skin), but if I AM in the sun, to use a sunblock- not a sunscreen- with Parsol in it. Many of them don't have this. I know Neutrogena SPFs above 30 do.

It stinks to not be able to tan, but being pale is better than being tan and itchy, or getting skin cancer, or having leather-y skin by the time your 40.

Good luck!
