so upset- long job related vent

I am a kindergarten teacher at a private school in Manhattan. My school is a bilingual school, with 2 full time co-teachers in the classroom. The teachers are supposed to be equal head teachers in the classroom. This is my 2nd year teaching there, and I love my kids, get along well with parents, and enjoy teaching. I am graduating with my masters and state certification in May. Regardless of all this, my boss the assistant principal informed me that they are not sure if they want to give me a letter of intent renewing my contract for next for next year. They are giving out the letters to other staff members on Friday, and expect a reply by the 18th. Meanwhile, my boss told me that I have to wait 6 WEEKS until they decide if they want to renew my contract or not. The thing that is causing them to doubt me.. the fact that I am not 'confident in my role with my co-teacher'. I am not an aggressive person, and I don't like conflict. I stand up for the really important things, but the day to day thing like how to do a project or lesson one way or another does not seem like such an earthshattering thing to me. My co-teacher has more experience than I do, and is more forceful than I am in many of her opinions. I have sent out my resume and cover letter to several schools but have not heard anything yet. I am so hurt that the school would do this to me. I don't think it professional to keep me on pins and needles for 6 Weeks. I want to tell them to take the letter and shove it, but I don't want to burn any bridges. I come into work feeling tense and I hate it. I don't know what to do.

It's totally understandable that you would be so upset. I'd think that the fact that you defer to your more experienced co-teacher would be viewed as a positive, since it's a sign that you're trying to learn and don't have an over-inflated sense of where you are now as a new teacher. (I say this from my experience as someone who has mentored pre-service teachers who think they know everything and are not receptive to feedback)

Good luck and keep sending those resumes. You don't deserve to be treated in such an unprofessional manner.

Laurie, have you explained that you're merely choosing your battles wisely? I agree, arguing over how to do a project just doesn't seem like a good use of your time and energy! And, ummm, would it kill your co-teacher to stand back and LET you take the reins every now and then? Hugs and love to you, as always.
