I didnt want a typical sweet sixteen party so they gave me a surprise party at my dads house instead.

It was so nice and so my speed..nothing big, my closest friends and family and my then bf helped plan it which meant the world to me!

My sister and I had a pretty big party. We were going to Italy that summer (and we'd go for the whole 2 1/2 months whenever we went) so we had it end of June (our bday is end of August - are we brats or what?)

We had the whole 'friends light the candles' thing and all the popular songs, etc etc...

Gosh, I Feel so old now!

*singing*
*****SIX...TEEN....CANDLLLESSSSSS***
that whole year was fun, we had a Sweet 16 to go to every month

(and the summer in Italy was even more fun

I got a plane ticket to France, to go stay with the girl that came to stay with us, via a foreign exchange program. I went by myself to stay with her family, I opted for this rather then a sweet sixteen party.

I chose to take my 2 best friends to dinner and a play in the city instead. It was our first trip into the city ALONE. Boy did we have fun...

I didn't have one. I told my mom I would for go the party in exchange for a car and the wedding of my dreams (later in life).... well, let's see I didn't get the car til I was 18 and I paid for it myself... and...hmm.... I'm paying for the wedding myself... I should've taken the damn party!!!!

My friends made me a surprise party

We were supposed to be going to a dance at Molloy HS and ended up being my birthday party. I had no clue what so ever!! Apparently people were talking about it over my head as I walked down the halls in school and even saw my friends sister in my neighborhood and still didn't get it. She lived in upper Manhattan and I lived in Queens.

I was a little dense and very surprised

Re: So who had a Sweet 16 Party?

I had a quinceanera.

It's a 15th Birthday event Here's the a version of the technical definition:
A Quinceanera is a celebration of a girls fifteenth birthday. It is a special occasion because it is when a girl becomes a woman. Hispanic girls all over the world celebrate this occasion. The difference between a Quinceanera and any other birthday party is that it is fancier and you invite more people. The first thing you do is go to church the day of your Quinceanera. You invite your closest relatives like aunts, uncles, parents, godparents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousin, and close friends. The priest talks to you about becoming a woman. Once the spiritual ceremony is over you move on to the social part of the Quinceanera. At this time your many invited guests come to celebrate your becoming a woman. This is where you celebrate by having a band play live music and dance all night.

Me, I skipped the church. I had a cleric uncle of mine do a blessing instead.
I always said it was like being married to god. You wear a White Dress have an escort and walk down the aisle in church. You have attendants (girls) and their escorts (the boys) there are the dresses for the attendants, just like a wedding. I had the invites, the programs, the big white dress, the tiara, the shoes, the 'last doll' the cake, the flowers, the band, the reception, the dances the whole nine yards.

I got a ring, necklace and braclet for the event as well.

It's a very very big thing in our family. Sort of a debut and a coming of age. We got lucky (even in Texas) and went for a small one. It was less than 10k.

I still have my guestbook and pen, the dress I have long ago gotten rid of. My tiara I still have and the last doll is packed away. Worse.. we have video!!! ARGH

I did but it wasn't like these mini-celebrations they have today. I had a huge sleep over. The guys were supposed to leave at midnight but they didn't. We were up the whole night. We toilet papered a girl's house. Played the ouija board, just had THE best time. My one friend never told his parents that he was at my house and they thought he was missing. So his parents called the cops and they showed up at my dad's job wondering where he was. He got in major trouble. It was so much fun!
