So everyone at Social Security seems to have a different answer. I was hoping one of you ladies went through this recently and can tell me an official answer. I've been trying to get my name changed but ever since the government shutdown that was not a possibility. Now that that's temporarily over I wanted to get it done. The woman I spoke with over the phone told me that you can't get your name change until you're legally married now in New York. Is that true??? Also the Social Security office closes at 3 and I have work until 330. What am I supposed to do?????

Re: Social security nightmare
You need to be married and have the marriage license (with the raised seal) before you can change anything (driver's license, registration, social security, passport, bank accounts, etc.)

That's weird because my cousin said she changed hers before she was married! Either way, I don't know when I can go if the office always closes at 3 and I work until 330!

Mail it in. You just need to mail in your marriage license and a photo ID. I did my passport since i wasn't going anywhere. It was fine and I got everything back within two weeks.

Can you mail it to any social security office or a certain one?
