We all get to hear so much about Social Security Funds for ourselves, our parents and our children.
Here’s my question, do you REALLY look at your long term financial plan with Social Security as part of the picture? Do your parents as well?
Jim & I do our planning and NEVER consider SS as income to be coming to us. It’s just NOT part of our picture. We couldn’t live off it anyway so why bother counting on it?
My parents live off SS because my mother is legally blind (so she says) and my little brother has been granted SS due to his mental capacity. Still we aren’t talking about a lot of money.
My grandfather lived off SS in his little apartment. I don’t know HOW he made it but he did. I think he got like $200 a month. I know the apt was only $125 and included all bills but still that’s $75 for food and it’s not like he was living in the lap of luxury.
Im curious how do you feel about SS?

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
I do/will not depend on it alone. This is why my husband & I are busting our buts now on other investments and our ss. checks will just be an extra bonus.

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
I plan on it.. because I paid into it.. and because the system really isn't in that bad shape as people think. It looks worse b/c they keep putting it together with Medicare which is REALLY in bad shape.

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
Its ok.. but I don't think I should rely on it just cause i put into it.
I mean if i got disabled and needed it, fine. But Im not disabled and I feel I responsible to my children and myself to invest as wisely as I can so that I don't have use rely on SS.
I hope (haha) that if I get to an age where the govt hands me SS money that I can laugh it off and put it into a fund for my children.
I hope anyhow.

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
I will never plan on it. My parents sort of do, but they were smart enough to invest...but they did it too late. So they are a little nervous about retiring.
That in turn makes me scared enough to do something about it now. I wish I had started contributing earlier.

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
it just shocks me to hear of people out there of my age group who are actually relying on ss in their future to retire.
Scares me actually.
I am VERY VERY lucky that I started young on my investing and that I work for a company that allows me to do the 401K, Stock Ownership & has a Pension plan for retirement.
Not everyone is and I understand that, but SS is so very little.

Re: Social Security.. Question / Poll
I think that one other possible answer could be
SS what the heck is that?
In other words, no we do not factor SS into our future.
