Some advice...

Some advice...

I've been teaching at the same school for 6 years. I'm almost 15 weeks pregnant and still have not told my principal. I am due in June and obviously will not be able to finish the rest of the year. I was thinking of telling her when I come back from Christmas vacation but I'm thinking...should I tell her before?
Also, if she asks if I plan on coming back in September, should I tell her the truth or say I haven't decided....(I'm not coming back by the way).

One more detail...my principal is not the nicest person in the world. She can be the biggest ***** and have an attitude for no reason...just to let you know...

TIA!!!

I'm not a teacher, but I would wait until after Christmas. I would say that you plan on coming back. But they are not supposed to ask (some HR law or something.) That won't stop them, my boss asks at least once a month.

I've heard that if they know you aren't coming back, you don't get FMLA, disability and they can take away your medical benefits. I don't know if it's true, but I figure just in case I change my mind and decide to go back, that option is available.

it is my understanding that it's better not tell that you are not planing to return because the company might refuse to pay for your maternity or a least give you problems about it. I am not quite sure but I definitely heard something to that extend. i would say that you are eather coming back or still thinking about it. Don't just say NO.

I would tell her before Christmas so that it's done and over with.

This is also a Catholic school, so they tend to make their own rules up...

You can tell before Christmas but don't tell them you are not coming back - they'll just need a sub for the rest of the year and they'll have the whole summer to hire someone new.

I'd tell her before, you'll feel so relieved for the break. If not it will be on your mind and you won't thoroughly enjoy your time off! You're having a baby!! It's such a great time, I hate when jobs make you feel guilty for wanting/having children. I guess what you have to consider is if this principal reacts harshly to you, do you really want this job after you have the baby anyway? How will she react when you need off unexpectedly, or didn't sleep well and need to come in late, or any other baby-related issues that come up that cause you to be unable to tend to your work-related duties! I know it's hard to leave and search for a job, but you'll always eventually find one!! Good luck, and remember, don't let her take anything away from your joy!

Re: Some advice...

I told my principal the other day and I feel soo much better. She was surprised and extremely happy...which shocked me. She then started telling me about her children and delivery, etc.
Of course she asked what I was going to do, if I was going to come back after the baby and told her that I was undecided at the moment. She told me that I need to make a decision by April~which is when we sign for contract. Tomorrow she's going to announce it to the rest of the teachers at our faculty meeting.

Thanks to all that gave advice. I do feel much better and can now enjoy being preggo at work.
