Some advice for those who havent tried on dresses yet...

Some advice for those who havent tried on dresses yet...

I thought I would post this while it was fresh in my mind and hope it helps someone to be prepared for the first time you go dress shopping

First things first, I went to two different stores on my first day of dress shopping, the first RK Bridal and the second Lillettes of Baldwin, two definately different expereinces which I did know going in but here it is...

If you are going to to to RK Bridal or a place which is similiar in the way of it being more of a discount or store or just a more hands on experience with lots and lots of dresses, you should be prepared to get extremely overwhelmed when you first walk in.

First of course, you will most likely get all giddy from seeing all these wedding dresses for the very first time but then you are asked to pick at some dresses (maybe around 5-7 or 8), and now you have soooo many racks in front of you and you are like whoaaa, where do I start. (And, I had even come prepared with pictures and designers and styles and I was still overwhelmed.)

1. My first piece of advice is that if you have come prepared with pics and dresses, you can look for them for a couple of minutes but if you dont find them, move on and find some others because at other stores which have a different approach with a person who is just assigned to you from the start you can ask about those dresses that you intended to try on. You dont want to waste time looking for dresses (that you can find more easily someplace else) when you night be missing out on others.

2. It is very extremely hard and frustrating to see the style (ballgown, a line, mermaid, etc.) dresses when they are in their bags so instead of only having a style that you like in mind, remember to consider the other factors like necline, beadwork, material so you can at least make somewhat of a clear decison when you decide to take the dress to try on.

3. This is really important (at least in my experience). along with #1 where I said to try on other dresses besides your first choice, dont rule out letting the attendant pick out some other dresses for you (which they will most likely base on your current choices, body type and also what their experience has shown them about certain dresses). This is important to me because at one of my appointments, the attendant gave me a dress to try on, it looked beautiful and is on my really short list now and when I went and looked it online after I got home, i really didnt like it in pics at all. So basically, Im saying that they know the dresses really well and have the first hand knowledge of how they look in person and on a body rather than just on a hanger or in a pic.

4. Bring a good clip or hair tie for your hair. I always took it down when I came out but it got soo sweaty trying on dresses.

5. Again, it gets so sweaty and really a work-out, much more than I had expected when trying on dresses. I had brought a bag with some waters in it, deoderant, a brush and a little powder (makeup) so I didnt feel like ugly duckling when i was trying on the dresses, lol, thats just me. * Many stores dont allow food or drink so dont walk in with it in your hand and drink while you are in the room changing by yourself. Oh also, my bridesmaids got hungry and I had brought some bars which they ate up like crazy and i also took some bites when i had a second. Its a long day and maybe at some points boring for those who arent the bride so food always comes in handy.

6. Although I didnt mind going to more then one appintment in a day, it definately was an all day thing and if you are not going along or just with your mom or someone like that, I would not suggest it. I felt bad that I had my bms running around like crazy people from 9 in the morning going into the city from Queens and then not ending until about 6 in Baldwin. (I guess I shouldve realized this first but sometimes you dont)

7. This is for if you are trying on a dress that should be a bit puffy or you want to be puffy. Im not sure if the stores wouldve offered to me if I hadnt asked but after reading some reviews before I went, I made sure to ask for a crinoline (like a puffy slip) before trying on dresses. I wanted to make sure that I got the right idea of how the dress really would look on the day and I know that some girls were dissapointed with how dresses looked in the store and then went back with another person who have them the crinoline and the dress looked much better (or atleast what they pictured it to be from the pic online)

8. Oh one more...this might not be important to some people which is fine but I knew from even before I went this was important to me...actually I lied (before this first real dress shopping experience, I tried on one dress on a total whim when I was in Macys one day) I felt absolutely disgusting, I had on no makeup whatsoever, had just come from work, my hair was disgusting and I was pale as a ghost and that totally affected the was I felt in the dress. I knew that the next time I went, that couldnt happen. I felt 200 times better this time ( I was even nervous because I have a lot of weight to loose) but it wasnt even that big of an issue this time because I did my hair, got a fake tan beforehand (brazil bronze which I reviewed), etc and it made a big difference. I actually somewhat felt like I hope to feel on that day.

Whewww- Ok, I guess thats it, I really hope this helps someone. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is def. great advice!! Esp #3-- the attendant brought a dress to me that I didn't think I would like... Low and behold, it was 'the one!'

Also, Lillette's is awesome, I highly recommend going there!!

same happened to me! I actually said.. when she walked out of the room for a sec..'what is this old lady;s dress doing here..ugh'...hahahahaha. And i bought that one!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also TOTALLY agree with the pic thing. I tried on dresses and felt one way.. only to come home and see pics and feel the TOTAL opposite. so take pics whenever you can. even if they say no..sneak it!

Edit to add that i must have skim read something and then filled in the blanks and posted about it. then ending up to just look like a nut.
You didnt write about taking pics did you? I so thought I read that in there. so then I'm going to piggyback on what you said... by just adding something.. take pics girls. I liked one dress in person and HATED the pics. It makes a difference to see it in a few pics. some places are cool with it and others arent. they claim its about designers stealing designs and blah blah.... clearly we aren't designers trying to steal designs. my take on it is that they dont want you to find THE DRESS there then find it for less money elsewhere and using a pic. You can always get the make and model of it though....but they dont usually offer that info... you have to ask or just look at the tags.

I totally agree with number three- my dress was a suggestion from the girl in the bridal shop- on the rack it was OK but once I put it on I knew it was the one!!
Also. be prepared that the dresses you LOVE in pictures may not look good on. I was totally convinced I wanted a lace dress and absolutely hated the way they looked on me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out this review. It was so helpful!

Although I am beyond excited to try on wedding dresses I am also very nervous. I have a tendency to get very stressed and confused

I would love to add one thing:

1. Wear boy shorts!! I had a thong on and wished I had worn (or brought) boy shorts. Im not shy but the crinolin was a little scratchy and it would ahve been noce to not have a bear A$$ touching all that:)
