I don't know where it started, but this is what I found a while back on the meanings:

Something Old, Something New,
Something Borrrowed, Something Blue

Something old must be something that has belonged to a happily married woman to ensure the transfer of happiness.

Something new is normally the gown or shoes.

Something borrowed should be gold to ensure future wealth and fortune.

Something blue symbolizes modesty, fidelity and love.

I have the something new (dress)
And the something blue (garter)

I was going to use my aunt's ring (originally my grandmothers) but it's not gold. But if I can't find a gold I'll use it anyway.

And someting old. Maybe my mom's wedding purse? It's yellowed though.
