Some tips on helping you choose a Make Up Artist.
As a part time make up artist (my thing is natural not airbrush so I do mostly photo shoots, not weddings) and reading all of the “help me pick” and quandaries (plus I am a bride too!), I thought I’d post this helpful thread. I hope it is not against any rules. I am not in any way promoting myself or taking sides. I just think that make-up is important and this may help with choosing and your day of go smoother!!!
1) You have a right to be picky. You have a right to ask questions. You have a right to ask the MU to change some things at your trail. Speak up! YOU ARE PAYING FOR A SERVICE! Would you not open your mouth if an interior designer painted your walls Pepto Bismo pink? You can’t complain about a MU if you are not CLEAR on what you want.
2) Some looks work for others, maybe not you. Eva Langoria may look good with a smoky eye but, it may make you look older. Red lips may look good on Scarlette Johansson but , make you look like Elvira. Everyone has different skin tones and features. Listen to the MUs suggestions. You may be surprised.
3) See if you can look at the artist’s book (physical pictures). It’s one thing to see small web images online, different in big print which will be your final product anyways. Look carefully to make sure there was not a lot of Photo Shopping to clean up bad mistakes.
4) Even if you don’t wear a lot or any make-up everyday, get your make up done by a professional! Why? Taking candids with your point and shoot to post on Facebook is WAY different then having them printed digitally (hell, even I am hiring a MU and I am one!). Even if it looks a little heavy in person, the pics (and video) are all you have of your big day.
5) I know you are paying a lot and feel that bringing your own make up defeats the purpose. It doesn’t. ONLY YOU know what works best on your face. For example, you know that Maybelline Great Lash makes your lashes long and lasts through sweating and tears. You know your favorite Mac lipstick does not bleed on you. You know your concealer is the PERFECT match for you. The make-up artist is an “artist”, they apply. They don’t live with you everyday to know what works for you 100% of the time. I am not saying they can’t use their products at all, but if something really works for you, bring it! Especially the lipstick, you will probably be re-applying yourself.
6) By all means, bring pics you like. Your idea of natural may be different to someone else. Also, pictures of your dress help. Especially ones showing the color.
7) Don’t come to your trial tanner than you usually are. Schedule the trial for when you will be the same tone as your wedding day. MUs HATE when they write down what they used and then day of, you are 5 shades lighter. You will be disappointed and baffled why the airbrush or concealer looked better at trial.
8) Please do any hair removal or skin treatments a week before trial and big day.
9) Hydrate your skin. Use a light moisturizer before trial and make sure you take care of your skin two weeks before the wedding.
10) If you can, check the make-up in day and indoor lighting.
There may be more but I am hungry and need lunch!
