He is a Maltese and 8 months old. Yesterday I noticed hard black bits, similar to seeds, at the tips of the pink part of his ears in his fur. I called the vet earlier. He seemed stumped, but not concerned. He said it sounds like dried up blood and I either could drive Scooby over or clean it myself with a q-tip and his ear wash. Since we are expecting this blizzard, his office is swamped. I'm going to work on it myself when he wakes up. He hates to have his ears fussed with though.
His ears were so very itchy before and during the time he had the cone on for his neuter surgery. Now, interestingly enough, he isn't scratching them as much now.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
Thanks.

Re: Something hard on the tips of Scooby's ears
My puppy had something similiar.. It was ear mites. They were inside the ears though.. all over the pink part. A goopy perscriptions cream cleaned it all up quick though

Did they look like a row of little black seeds? They are on both ears but more on one than the other.

I would def get it checked out if you can....it does sound like ear mites.
You can get an over-the-counter ear wash for it, but it is best to see a vet as scratching can cause infection.
Good Luck!

What are ear mites? I do have Flush that the vet gave me for his ears. I'm going to put that on and call him again tomorrow. Hopefully the roads will be clear.
Thanks.

They are little bugs in the ear. They look like black seeds. You can wash them out.. That will help.. But you need Meds to kill the larvae. It's not an emergency though. Don't kill yourself in the snow. Clean them out today and go to the vet when its safe.
