Something my mother said to me about photography...

Original post by prncssrachel

She was asking me what kind of quotes I've been getting regarding photography for the wedding, and when I told her how much we want to spend, she wasn't shocked, but she did say, ' Rachel, I'm not going to tell you what to do, but your father and I have been married for 33 years and in that time, I don't think I've showed my wedding album to ANYONE except you and your sister. I love that I have the pictures that I do, but I don't want to see you spend all that money on something that will collect dust after many years.'
This kind of made me sad, like, ok, no one will see these. But then I started thinking. My mother and I are very much alike. We keep a few picture frames around the house with family, etc, but we're not big on the photo albums. Now, I know this is my wedding and all, but I really don't think that I want to spend the amount I was going to. I know we'll look at the pictures for the first few years, but I know myself, and I will not sit and relive the day through pictures all the time. I just won't. I'd rather live in the moment. So JT and I have been thinking about just getting a very minimal package now. Does anyone else feel this way?

brianna makes a good point..
and whatever you decide you should pick a good quality photographer, make sure you get all your proofsand after the wedding you can always upgrade your album larger(right jennbaby ), and get a good videographer, i think when i was at patken he even said, if you dont want to spend money now, then get the raw footage package, and if you decide you really like it can always be upgraded later for studio editing and all..but at least you'll have the footage from the day, and see somethings that you probably missed...your photo and video are the ONLY things that will be reminders years to come

Whoa..
reading the cost of photography is nearly making me sick.

Im paying $3700 for photo/video/basic flowers.

geez!

I thought I was over budget!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dear beloved (may she burn in hell) biological mother of mine, burned every photo of my parents wedding and all of my childhood photos. I have to beg cousins and such to see what I looked like before the age of 10.

We want photos.. but at the same time, in 5 years no one will look at them. We kept ours to a minimum. I mean we photos for the office, folios for the parents and like 3 (8X10) which Im still not sure why we have. Still Photo was only like $1500 with Negatives. Pictures are memories... I feel the need to have something.

FH said last night 'Yeah then the kids can say 'check it out....Mom is actually in a dress'!!!'

Mean man!

I wish someone would have brought that to my attention before I got hitched. My mom said it afterwards when she heard what we paid.

Come to think of it, I could have just had someone to take pics and put together a small album for us. Some places let you keep the proofs so I could have made my own parent albums. Im with you. I would have had an extra $3k in my pocket and still had pics taken

It really depends how YOU feel. I love looking at my pics but as far as still showing them to people PLEASE. They would think I had lost a screw.

We are not planning on going all out on the video, but we are also not going to skimp on it because I really think that my kids would much rather watch that someday then look at boring pictures. So we are going to at least have a good video. I really like all of the feedback I have gotten on this. It's nice to hear how everyone else feels about this. I really like the idea of paying for a package with the negatives and proofs. I also like the option to upgrade later. This way I can know for sure if it is worth it after we get the proofs back. But for now I think we are going to low ball our budget for photography. I just can't handle the thought of this wedding getting out of hand with cost. It's just not worth it to have 5 gazillion pictures of myself!

I think it's great that you know what's important to you now. As long as you give your self options you will be fine. Right now you don't want tons of pictures and big albums. We said pictures are SOOOO important. Well, they were so important that we have yet to meet with the photographer about our album - it's been 11 months
