Americans usually ignore the sixpence, afterall, it's british currency (= 6 british pennies)... not to mention the coins left circulation in the late 1960's....
Is anyone putting a sixpence in their left shoe, besides me?
Mine will be in my shoe only for the ceremony (I like my left foot too much to torture it further...) I just won my sixpence on ebay.... I'm a history geek.... I bought one from 1621... the reign of king james I (you know, of 'king james bible' fame)

Re: something old, something new......
oh, I looked up what each part symbolizes:
old- continuity with the familial past new- hope for the future borrowed- family and friends you can count on blue- purity (think Virgin Mary in blue robe) sixpence- luck of prosperity in the future
so I was debating which year for a while....
I thought 1967 would be nice (my parents wedding year), or possibly 1867, since it's a victorian rhyme, and that would be 100 years prior to my parents wedding... I was also debating one of my parents birthdates....
I was born in the 70's, and FH in the 80's, so our birthdates weren't options
In the end, the old crusty one won out... it was soooo cool looking

I bid on a 1967 one, as it's the year of my birth. Yeah, I'm old.

What happens if you're wearing sandles and the sixpence falls out?
I'm doing everything except for something in my shoe.

I think 1967 was the last year. After that they went to decimal coinage and did away with the older coins. Too bad, but it made sense.

Re: something old, something new......
so I'm worried about losing my almost 400 year old sixpence... I'm actually going to tape it (with clear tape) to the inside of my shoe, either in the pointy toe region (where no toe can fit ) or by the arch of the foot, since my arch is rather high....

Re: something old, something new......
Yep, got mine!!! I actually had bought it for my cousin for her wedding in December, but her mom accidentally forgot it at home!!! So it's now my lucky sixpence, but it means more to me because it was intended for my beloved cousin!
I have absolutely no idea what year my sixpence is from. Hmmm, I guess I should take a look!

Mine came with a little 'pouch' to put it in... I wonder if I can put that in my shoe (with the coin in it) and tape it.
Or just tape the sixpence to the inside.

I think it's awesome that the brits were clinging to their base 12 numerical system until the 1960's

since mine is an antique, I grabbed one of those tiny ziplock bags that are attached to new shirts (with the spare button in them). I'll put the coin in there, and then tape it. but it's coming out of my shoe as soon as I'm in the limo!!!

Re: something old, something new......
I have a six pence! My DOC gave that to me as soon as I met with her. She told me she forgot to give it to a couple once and they didn't make it so now I guess she doesn't want to jinx anyone else...LOL

I plan on getting one too. I will probably secure it to my shoe with surgical tape. This way, it will stay put and not bother my foot!
