something old, something new......

Original post by portjeffbride

ok, how many LIW brides know the entire rhyme?

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.....

...and a silver sixpence in her shoe.

Americans usually ignore the sixpence, afterall, it's british currency (= 6 british pennies)... not to mention the coins left circulation in the late 1960's....

Is anyone putting a sixpence in their left shoe, besides me?

Mine will be in my shoe only for the ceremony (I like my left foot too much to torture it further...) I just won my sixpence on ebay.... I'm a history geek.... I bought one from 1621... the reign of king james I (you know, of 'king james bible' fame)

I've always known the whole thing, but I just didn't think having a coin in my open toed 3.5in sandals would be too comfortable.

since mine is an antique, I grabbed one of those tiny ziplock bags that are attached to new shirts (with the spare button in them). I'll put the coin in there, and then tape it. but it's coming out of my shoe as soon as I'm in the limo!!!

I'm really into history, so I thought about buying a really old one--there's a couple of Elizabeth I ones on eBay right now--but I'm spending soooo much money right now I just can't do it. It's amazing how much money you spend right before the wedding!

can I share my ebay savy with you?
I'm so excited
I felt guilty bidding, and even talked it over with mom... she said go for it, but don't pay $50+..... she was excited by the idea that the coin will sit with her pearls and be passed on to future brides in our family...

I got a James I sixpence (1621) yesterday for $40 + $3.50 shipping. I scrutinized the pictures, and am fairly sure it is of 'very fine' quality (coin grading system...) If it is, the coin has a book value of $110+ I'll consider it an investment piece... that's my rationalization

Neat! I love getting bargains on eBay. Last year I bought a World's Fair souvenir apron that was listed as being from 1962, but I looked at the pics and could tell it was from the 30s NYC World's Fair, which meant that it was worth something, there are a lot of 30s World's Fair collectors. I got it for practically nothing. Then I looked it up in a 30s World's Fair book at Borders and it's worth a bomb. Except I really like it so I'm not going to sell it. When we buy a house I'll figure out a way to frame it and hang it on the wall in the kitchen.
