Something to THINK ABOUT....(Sexual Pretators).

Something to THINK ABOUT....(Sexual Pretators).

For all those people that are buying a home, has anyone thought to go to the local police station in that area and get a 'list' of all the registered sex offenders in that area?????

Apparently this information is free to the public and oddly enough people that are looking for houses are more interested in the school district rather then knowing if you have a registered sexual pretator living right next door to you.

We already purchased our first home and did not move in, however I will see to it that I get this information for our next home.

Has anyone else done this

Just ETS, it just got me thinking with the girl down in Florida last week who was kidnapped and murdered..it's just so sad.

Wow, I think even though I have already bought my house and grew up in the neighborhood that I will go get the list anyway.

What a great idea. Thank you!

While this is important, can you get a list of other types of criminals that live in your area? I just found out an accused drug dealer lives across the hall and whose to say there isn't a murderer down stairs?

Christine I'm not sure about other offenses..I'm only sure about the sex offenders because they have to register as that for the rest of their lives... (if they live that long)

The other criminal activity we may not know about because they paid their dues to society (blah blah ) it's just something to think about because these people do live among us and right under our noses, even though you should be watching your kids anyway, you can not guard them 24/7!

I think it would be interesting to see but I wouldnt not buy a house if there was a sex offender living in the area. There are plenty of unknown criminals all over this area in addition to the known ones...so there really is no way to protect yourself. Especially in such a populated area like NYC and LI, I doubt there are many neighborhoods where there wouldnt be some known offenders.

Stef, that is so true, but being a new Mom myself I would reconsider buying in an area with a sex offenders living next door.

I'm one of those people who make friends with everyone living next to me, stupid me I'd be having coffee with the guy!!!

You are right, only sex offenders have to register with local law enforcement. I wonder why others don't.

There are career criminals that will continue to committ crimes even if they paid their dues already and are not required to let the neighborhood know they are in town.

I am not saying that we shouldn't know about the sex offenders, but since this is the case, it would be more meaningful to me to know about other criminals as well.

Also, checking before you buy will not prevent a convicted sex offender from moving into the area after you move in.

I would probably feel differently if I had much of a choice in the matter. But in Brooklyn, Im sure I would have a hard time finding a house that didnt have a sex offender somewhere near by. As it is, there is a sex offender on my block (statatory rape) that we know of thru the gossip mill. Not quite the same as one of the really dangerous guys but still.

I wonder if it indicates on the list what kind of crimes the person committed. Anyone know?

No matter what, its good information to know.

christine, its only sexual predators though, I believe due to megans law they are required to register with the state. THat is not required of other criminals!

I know that's my point.

I would want to know if I am living next door to a murderer or armed robber as well as a sexual predator.

I guess only certain sex offenders are listed here b/c Mr Sex Offender who lives on my block is not there.

Yippe, no one in my area :D

The guy in FL would not have been on any list. He was not convicted of any previous sex crime, just accused of one....I think I want to put Molly in a bubble

It's the ones you don't know about (aren't convicted) that you have to watch out for. Unfortunately, there are a lot more predators out there than most are aware of.

To be honest, the only reason why I would probably not buy on a street/neighborhood where there's a convicted child molestor, etc. is because of the decrease in home value.

Its good to know...to tell you children not to talk to that man...etc...

but you could have one move in after you did...

I think that Megan's Law was passed due to the very high rate of sex offendors who are released back into society (too quickly, IMO) and who then immediately commit a similar crime. I think the rate of repeat sexual crimes committed by a sex offendor is higher than the rate of other repeat offendors. That might be why we talk about sexual predators, but not robbery predators or assualt and battery predators.

While this all raises a very good point, I don't think I'd change my decision to buy a home. It's not as if a predator from another neighborhood couldn't end up in my part of town, or as if a predator that lives on my block would never leave my block.

Unfortunately, all it means for parents is that we simply cannot be a single bit lax in our watchfulness of our kids.

The local elementary school is at the end of my block. The district is very vigilant in sending out notices regarding students who have been harrassed or 'flashed' at the bus stop and notifying us if any sexual predators are in the area. They do not list names but tell us where we can get the information. As the mom of an 11 year old it is very scary
