For all those people that are buying a home, has anyone thought to go to the local police station in that area and get a 'list' of all the registered sex offenders in that area?????
Apparently this information is free to the public and oddly enough people that are looking for houses are more interested in the school district rather then knowing if you have a registered sexual pretator living right next door to you.
We already purchased our first home and did not move in, however I will see to it that I get this information for our next home.
Has anyone else done this
Just ETS, it just got me thinking with the girl down in Florida last week who was kidnapped and murdered..it's just so sad.

This is something I looked up AFTER we bought our home here in CT. I am sad to say that there IS a sex offender living on my block, as well as a number of others in the nearby area. (and I live in a nice neighborhood!) This scares me to DEATH. But like Claud said, this just means I must never be lax in watching my daughter. I will have to be a bit overprotective I guess. Plus, we are planning to build home in 5 years, so we won't be here forever anyway.
FYI, you can also look up what crime they were convicted of AND see their picture. (at least on the CT website you can.) Also, the crimes they committed might have been committed YEARS ago...the guys on my block was convicted over 20 years ago (not that it makes it better I guess). The guy down the street was convicted of something fairly minor, so I am not too worried. And like everyone else said, it's the ones that aren't on the registry that you need to look out for.

i looked up my zip - there was one guy with 4 convictions!!!!!!!!!!! how freakin' scary is that??

You are right..I believe that sexual offenders are graded, and only the highest level ones have thier names and addresses posted. Those who have lesser degree offenses are not made public. For example, my cousin was walking home from a party when she was like 16 (drunk of course), and her and her friend stopped to pee in an alley. (I know, thats disgusting) Anyway, after they were done and leaving the alley, a cop saw them walking out from there and questioned them, saw the 'puddle' and wrote them a ticket for public urination, which will put you on the sex offender list, but as the lowest level offender. If they listed everyone who was caught urinating in public could you imagine how long the list would be? However, there are offenders who can be convicted of molestation, but not actual rape, and I dont know if they qualify to be put on the list with an exact address and picture. That is the scary part.

The guy on my block had sex with a minor while he was married. I dont know how old she was exactly ... somewhere between 14 and 16. While he was on duty (he was a cop at the time). While he was married. With two kids. He was convicted of statutory rape but that could have been a plea bargain from a more serious crime. So he is a convicted felon. That seems like a serious enough crime to be known to me.
Public urination counts as a sex offense? Thats pretty stupid. No matter what, if she got a ticket, its not a serious crime.
