Song for those dearly departed

Song for those dearly departed

HI - I recently lost my grandfather and FH's grandfather only has another day or two left, he's in the hospital - we just found out today :(
I was looking for a song that we can play during the reception in dedication to those who are no longer with us. I want to honor them but I don't want everyone to get sad either. Can anyone recommend a song that would be appropriate for that? Or do you think I should just maybe skip the whole thing?

Sorry about FH's granddad

We are doing a memorial candle in the beginning of the ceremony. We are playing a specific song when FH and FMIL are lighting the candle at the church and it is mentioned in the program.

HTH!

I want to change my answer! I think the Circle of Life from the Lion King soundtrack might be good. I'm also thinking of doing something like this for FI's mother. We'll prob also mention her in the program and have a moment of silence during the ceremony.

I dont know but at a wedding if I was a guest this would rip me apart as I am very emotional.

Sorry, just my honest opinion.

i was thinking of doing something like that but didnt wanna depress everyone at the reception. we are mentioning them in the program and will prob do a reading at the church. IMO, the reception is a party and everyone just wants to have a good time

How about 'Forever Young' by Rod Stewart.
It is a little upbeat, and not a tearjerker.

Forever Young (Stewart/Cregan/Savigar)

May the good Lord be with you down every road you roam
and may sunshine and happiness surround you when you're far from home
and may you grow to be proud, dignified and true
and do unto others as you'd have done to you.
Be courageous and be brave and in my heart you'll always stay forever young.

May good fortune be with you, may your guiding light be strong.
Build a stairway to heaven, be a prince or a vagabond.
And may you never love in vain and in my heart you will remain forever young.
Forever young, forever young.

And when you finally fly away, I'll be hoping that I served you well.
For all the wisdom of a lifetime, no one can ever tell.
But whatever road you choose, I'm right behind you, win or lose, forever young.

First of all I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and your FH's grandfather especially right before your wedding. Are you doing something at the ceremony? I would suggest doing something at the ceremony over the reception. I think the reception is more of a time of celebration and partying (at least IMO) - what is everyone going to do when you play a song? If you're playing a song to dance with your grandmother or something like that it would be nice, but if you're just playing a song for everyone to listen to it might be hard for you - so I would say do it during your ceremony

I agree.

You could also put a picture of them somewhere at your hall with a single candle and a nice poem.

I lost my dad and my son will dance with me to the father daughter but the photo montage will show pics of my and my dad when I was little to Tim McGraw's Live like you were dieing, because that was a big saying of my dads.

My father will not live to see my wedding day. I will dance with my brother in his honor, but it will be a more appropriate song for us - not a father/daughter song - it will be too hard for the family.

I agree, too much sadness. it's a day to celebrate your love. my mom also passed, but I will just have a candle lit for her on the table where everyone grabs their seating card. also, I'm thinking about a mement of rememberance for her at the ceremony.

I think the song at the reception is too much to handle.

My mom passed away a year and a half ago and I will use a memorial candle for her...and play some songs she liked.

Thanks. Though now that I think about it, I may play some songs that he liked. One time, years ago, we had been in the car when Jimmy Buffet's 'Margaritaville' came on and he was singing it. I thought it was cool since Dad is much older than the fathers of my peers. So maybe I'd play songs in his honor but not announce them as such - only I would know and that would keep things easier on my family.

Josh Groban - To Where you are is a beautiful song.

http://www.joshgroban.com/main_music_frame.html

Who can say for certain
Maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me
Your memories so clear

Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You're still an inspiration
Can it be?
That you are mine
Forever love
And you are watching over me from up above

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile to know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing
All power can't be seen

As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me everyday
'Cause you are mine
Forever love
Watching me from up above

And I believe
That angels breathe
And that love will live on and never leave

Fly me up
To where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile
To know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

I know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are
