So the one thing that I'm slacking on... The only thing I don't have done yet... My must play and do not play lists for my DJ!
My question is, for a five hour reception (we are having a five hour one because there is no cocktail hour), how many songs do I need on my must play list? And what's the right ratio of slow and fast? Can anyone help me?!

I don't know the right ratio of fast and slow..but I'm sure your DJ does.
Instead of writing down every song to play, maybe you can focus on genres? DJs have experience with this, so they know the crowd favorites to play to keep the party going.

Just give a list to the DJ's of like 10 to 15 songs you want to hear. He should know where to fit them into his sets

Yea you dont have to give him a list of what he should play ALL NIGHT, just things you know you are DYING to hear or just as it says, must play list! Like songs you just HAVE to hear that night =)
Dont worry hes the DJ and he should have a set but there are people who LOVE house music and want that to be the majority of the night, then there are people who enjoy the oldies, or hip hop, or spanish music, ya know? so he just wants to get an idea of what you want for the night as well.

We were told not to give him more than (at most) 40 songs that we would like played, and not to necessarily expect them all, especially if most are a little slower-paced.
I'm more concerned with my do not play list. I have a huge page in a notebook covered with 'do not play' songs which I'd be happy to share with you when I get home later if you'd like.

Our DJ gave us a list and we crossed off a bunch of songs and then added a bnuch of must ahves at the end. WE haven't had the official meeting to discuss it yet though.

My DJ uses a website and it pretty much displays what they would normally be playing. From that we will make a DO NOT PLAY list and then we were told to give about 10-15 songs we DO WANT PLAYED. Also, of course the first dance, father-daughter, cake cutting, etc.
I am also going to tell them by genre what we want. We are a very active group, so we don't really want too many slow songs. Also, just b/c we like to dance, doesn't mean we want reggaetone (sp?) played at our wedding. Not that I hate it, I just don't think it fits our guest list. Be specific that way
HTH (all of this does get really confusing and frustrating, but I'm sure you're DJ knows you by now and will do what's right).
