sort of off topic... but curious... would you have an amniocentesis when pregnant?
Original post by aliwnec10
I know this is a personal question for some... but i'm just curious. (my SIL is pregnant and we were talking about this).
Would you have an amnio test? Some say no because there is a 1% chance it can cause a miscarriage. Some say yes because it can determine if there is a birth defect (Downs, etc) in the early stages of your 1st trimester.

are you sure an amnio can detect autism?? i thought autism didn't develop until the child was around the age of 2...
eta: i forgot to answer the question! based on my nedical history, i have no need for one and wouldn't put the baby at risk. if i'm over 35 when i have a child, i'll think about it then based on how the pregnancy goes and if the doctors think there's a problem. it's just not worth the risk
one of my cousin's triplets was diagnosed with slight autism before he was 2.

Actually, amnios are not typically done in the first trimester, they are done in the second. If you've never been pregnant, I think it's hard to speculate on terminating said 'hypothetical' pregnancy until you actually ARE pregnant. I say this becuase, again, before I was pregnant, I would have said that I would terminate. However, when it is really happening to you, your perspective changes dramatically. Lucky for us, we had no reason to consider an amnio.
i know. i agreed with you in my last post regarding this.
And yes you are correct... it is the second trimester (after 14 weeks). My mistake.

i'm changing it to say 'around 2'. my point is basically that they're not diagnosed at birth--it's later in life. that's how i can't understand how it can be detected by an amnio when a child can be typical until the age of 2 and then develop autism.

well crap... i'm just screwing up the info. It was supposed to say Downs, not autism. Oops!

I would never elect to have an amnio. They typically do it well into the 2nd trimester, and although the risk is maybe an elevated 1% of miscarriage, it is just not worth it to me. Why risk a miscarriage to a healthy baby? Thats just my point. I do understand wanting one in special circumstances, and wouldn't judge anyone for having it done. But for me personally...couldn't do it.

I would not have one. I would not risk a misscarriage, even in the smallest percent. I have also read that in some cases, the amniocentesis has caused defects in babies that would have not occurred, if not for the test.
Also, for me test results would not change my mind about continuing the pregnancy, even if the baby might be born with a defect. Even if I knew there was something wrong early on in my pregnancy I would NOT terminate, so what's the difference between finding out after the baby is born that something is wrong? Just my personal feelings on this.

I am over 35 and both FH and I have discussed it. We are going to have it.
Everybody has their own reasons for wanting/not wanting to do it.
There is no right or wrong. It's just a matter of opinion and informed choices. There are pros and cons with everything. So it's really a matter of individual choice.

You're definitely 100% right on this one. It definitely is a personal choice. I think it's very important to discuss these issues with your FH or husband. My FH and i have discussed this many times. If something came up odd with the preliminary testing, i would definitely have the amnio. I know that many people feel that the results would not change the outcome, but it would for us and that is our personal choice.
I would definitely be afraid of that scary needle though!

I took an AFP test and the results were slightly lower that than my regular rate of having a child with downs compared to my age. Still the risks were higher with the amnio to have a miscarriage. I opted not to get the amnio and even if the AFP test was really bad I don't think I would have taken the amnio. I am only 32. All of my other tests including the sonogram came out fine. It is really up to your SIL. She doesn't have to do anything she doesn't want to do. Doctors are not Gods. Do research!

I voted 'yes, I plan to' b/c there was no option for 'yes if it was necessary'. Being as I am getting older, if I had anymore and it was recommended, yes, I would have it done.

i say no and here's why.... i have a child and i didn't even have an ultrasound...... i would not have amnio done b/c one, i fear needles and two, i'd rather not know if there's something wrong for the simple fact that if i know, i'll worry more AND it kind of puts you in that position to make a choice that i just don't think God intended me to make (have the disabled/sick child or not). plus, if you live for 6 months knowing you are growing a 'sick/not well' child after the child is born, there's a chance of resentment towards this totally innocent child....i just could never put myself or a child through that. it's just mean.
