Okay, so we finally decided on our china, Waterford's Biella pattern (and I found out that I have a china twin too! ), and I am debating between the soup bowl and the accent plate. I really like the accent plate, it adds something different to the setting (it's a square plate) and it's less money than the soup bowl. But everyone says you need to register for the soup bowl, which I doubt I'd even use! I'd feel bad registering for both items, but then others are telling me to just register for it, but most will buy the soup bowl instead of the accent plate.
What's your opinions on this? Thanks!
Here's a pic of the china, the square accent plate is shown, but not the soup bowl:

Re: Soup Bowl or Accent Plate?
I think that your suspicions are accurate. From my own very receint experence we received: 11 of 12 5 piece place settings 7 of 12 soup bowls 1 of 12 accent plates (and that was b/c it came as a 'bonus' when the person gave us the setting of the other pieces we recieved 1 oval serving bowl 1 coffee pot
we registered for all the other accent things like cream, sugar, serving platter and all purpose and fruit bowls too.
Now that we are on our completion - we will buy the remaining stuff.
That being said, I would register for as much of it as you want. Also, some months they give the soup/accent plate as a bonus, so I would register for it for that purpose too.

Re: Soup Bowl or Accent Plate?
The soup bowl will be versatile. Can use it to serve a pasta course.
If you register for the china at Fortunoff & Bed Bath & Beyond: BBB will match any bonus offered by Fortunoff at the time of purchase. Fortunoff changes their bonus options, so keep checking.
When we registered, there was a soup bowl bonus. A few months later (and just in time for shower purchases) F.'s changed the bonus to soup bowl plus accent plate! BBB matched the bonus + 20% coupons. I had my FMIL pass on the info. Even though the coupon lists Waterford as an exclusion, they will give the 20% discount!
We were very fortunate to finish our china before the bonus vanished. Now, I can happily say I have a service of 12 with 12 soups and 12 accents!!!
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BONUS but I would register for the soups.

Re: Soup Bowl or Accent Plate?
I'm your china twin!
You already know... but we registered for the soup bowls. Maybe if you see that your stuff is flying off the registry and you need to add more, then add the accent plates. I love our china!!!

I would say soup bowl. It may seem like you wont use it but others will. The accent plate is really nice, but it isnt going to be used. We registered for teh soup bowl an no accent plate

I chose BOTH for ours. Worse case scenario is that you get more of one than the other and you exchange for what you want/need afterwards.

Re: Soup Bowl or Accent Plate?
I have to disagree with the other posters....if you don't think you'll ever use the soup bowl, no need to register for it. If you like the accent plate, I'd do that. Your pattern is so pretty, btw!
Do you older female relatives you can 'poll' in terms of how many times they've used their soup bowls?
My mom has used hers once (and only 1or 2 bowls) in the 28 years I've been alive, so I opted out of the soup bowls (I also happend to HATE soup) and went with the square accent for salads and/or desserts.
Unfortunately, as a previous poster mentioned, I didn't get ANY of my square accent plates, so I purchased those when I did some registry completion. I can't tell you how happy I am when I look at my china cabinet and see the set together!
