Re: spain or canary island honeymoon
I know there are a few Spain honeymooners on this board. I just got back from my two week honeymoon in Spain. I haven't had time to post about it yet, but it was wonderful. We flew into Madrid and spent three nights there. We stayed at the Hotel Palace and did a lot of sightseeing, and probably to the disappointment of some, went to a bull fight (which wasn't the thrill of my trip - yuck!). We visited the Prado and Renia Sophia museums, and ate really well. From Madrid, we flew to Sevilla and stayed in the Hotel Alphonso XIII. Fabulous city! We stayed 3 nights there as well. We did a lot of sight seeing there as well, where the main attraction is the Cathedral. We climbed to the top of the Giralda - the tower. It was breathtaking overlooking the city. From Sevilla, we had a rental car and drove through the county to Grananda, where we stayed at the Hotel Alahambra Palace. Unfortunately we only had one night there and didn't get there until mid-afternoon, so we missed actually going to the Alahambra, but the stay there was fantastic. The next day we headed back down south for our final destination - a week in Marbella in the Costa del Sol. Wow:) We stayed at the Hotel Puento Romano which is right on the beach. We had perfect weahter the entire two weeks we were there - no rain at all!! Basically we relaxed here, no sight seeing, except for the day and night we spent down in Puerto Banus, where all the yachts and great little shops are.
I loved every minute. I have never been out of the country before my honeymoon, and it was a great experience. I felt really comfortable in that most Spaniards spoke English, but I started to pick up Spanish pretty easily. The Euro currency was pretty easy too, as the exhange rate with the dollar was relatively even, give or take 10 cents.
So as far as recommending anything, I can only tell you based on my experience. I had wanted to do Barcelona and the Canary Islands too, but we only had two weeks and limited funds!! I'd love to go back again soon.
Madrid was very city like - they had Mickey D's and Starbucks on the corner and was good for art museums. The restaurants are all fantastic as well. I love the beach area, so the Costa Del Sol was my dream. That'd be my pick. Good Luck.

Re: spain or canary island honeymoon
I am a Spain honeymooner as well.. Fh's family lives in Spain (outside Madrid)...we were going to do the Canary Islands (I think weather should be fine..I think it is desert-like)instead we are flying into Barcelona for 3 days...and then hopping over to Menorca in the MEditerranean (closer than canary islands). We chose Menorca over Mallorca b/c in August it is very crowded (the Spaniards have off)
then we are going to Madrid...to sightsee and to visit his family...and a festival (running of the bulls - but not pamplona)
I'm sure we will go to Spain many times in our lives b/c of his ties. Next I would go to Costa del Sol and Sevilla.

Re: spain or canary island honeymoon
We were supposed to go to the Canary Islands but because of 9/11 did not (got married 9/15) but I really do want to go again. We had been planning for 9 months and we were so excited. We were flying into Madrid then to Tenerife Island, then afterwards we were flying back through Barcelona and staying there for the night.Maybe some day. Have fun!
