Oh no thats not the real way to make spanish rice from puerto rico- you have to make the safrito first! you need a special gadget to get the real taste -in brentwood in the spanish stores they sell them its wood and you put the spices in it and mix it all together. lets see if i remember its garlic, 2 packets sazon, green pepper chopped up, onion chopped up, celantro, salt to taste and tablespoon of oregano. in a pot lightly saute in oil the safrito mixture then add 2 cans of tomato sauce fill the cans with water include the water in pot and pilon. Dont forget you can make it with gandules ( the pigeon peas) or the little meat sausages not the hanging sausages you see they are like mini hot dogs I cant think of the name right now. All these ingredients if youre not familiar with go to a spanish community in the market and they will help you get them. once you have that mixture come to a boil add the rice. the amount of rice goes by the same amount of water you would use to make regular rice- remember the tomato sauce is counted as water and the gandules if you use them- cover pot and let cook- stir occasionally on med high heat. if the rice gets too thick just add water.

Well, my way is the 'easy'way of makinf it and my puerto rican family as well as my husband's puerto rican family make it like this, they don't use sofrito in their rice, only in their beans. Different parts of puerto rico make dishes different ways.
GREAT recipe!! That is the one my grandmother always gives everyone when they ask for her recipe.

She gives them that goya recipe?
I am not spanish but I love spanish food. my brother's MIL and FIL are from Ecuador and I love it when we have dinner at their house. Her mom makes good stuff and if I could spell it out I would list some things but I know how to say them.

Re: Spanish Rice Recipies...
my mil is puerto rican and her recipe is similar. they also make it in the box and you just add water and cook for 25 minutes. i made that the other night for my husband as a quick throw together with pork.

My MIL is also Puerto Rican and she says that she cannot give me a recipe... I need to watch her. This is because she adds 'a little of this and a little of that.'

I would love to make that rice. In what section at the grocery store would I find sazon spice and gandules? Would that be in the goya isle?

Re: Spanish Rice Recipies...
that sounds so good. DH like Rice a roni, but I'll have to make it from scratch someday soon. I love Spanish food. Any kind, Puerto Rican, Cuban, mexican, peruvian... you name it.
I have to try the Ropa Vieja recipe from Goya. That's my favorite Cuban dish!! with fried plantains.
I know stop and shop has a whole international foods aisle that would have it.

Yes, sazon is in a small long box, there are a few different ones, get the regular box that is orange, not the yellow, and the gandules should be right there as well. If you;re making beans and don't have the time to make the sofrito, you can get it in the jar in that aisle as well. Enjoy, but beware Stefanie, lots of salt in this recipe so drink lots of water my preggo buddy!!

What is sofrito?
It is a thick seasoning paste that you can add to dishes.
