Is it wrong to get one, if you are not jewish? I just think they are so pretty.

I wouldn't say 'wrong' but not necessarily appropriate. What type of officiant are you getting married by? They may have an issue with it if it's a Christian officiant. An interfaith minister or a JP would be fine with it though. What about a trellis instead?

Re: Speaking of chuppahs ...
When i met with the florist, I just loved this look and was ignorant and didnt even realize that this was a 'chuppah' - our officiant is FH's father and he wouldnt care. But I dont know ... I feel weird now. I really love this look -- what are your thoughts?
I say do it.. I think they are beautiful also, fi is jewish so we're having one.. that exact one actually
People that aren't jewish, probably wouldn't even know that it is one, they would just think it's an arch..

Re: Speaking of chuppahs ...
OK - I'll lbe the bad guy here...I can't explain why - but it just offends me (I'm sorry) BTW - I'm Jewish. I feel that all religions have sacred and important traditions that are important to that religion and I feel that when people, who are not part of that religion, decide to use it for their own purposes, it takes away. I feel the same way about Jewish people getting Christmas trees, etc. MY FH is Christian, so we will be lighting a unity candle, which I always thought was a beautiful tradition, but I certainly wouldn't be lighting one if we were both Jewish. I don't see anything wrong with an arch, but I think to have a chuppah is inappropriate and may be insulting to some.JMHO...

I agree with Mrs. Wask. There is a long tradition behind the Chuppah, and to use it for no Jewish purpose is disrespectfuly to the years of Jewish tradition. The chuppah is one of the only requirements in a Jewish wedding (you don't need to be married in a temple, or even to have a rabbi, but a chuppah is required).
There are other alternatives. You can have an arch which is not a chuppah.

Sorry to say I'm with the other girls.
The Chuppah is not just a pretty decoration, it's a religious symbol!
Maybe if you had an arch decorated with similar gatherings along the sides?

I wouldn't call it a chuppah More like an arch - alot of people get married under and arch!

I also feel that Chuppahs should only be used in the Jewish ceremony. It has a great deal of meaning and is not just a decoration. I think an arch would be a great alternative. ?

I'm not Jewish & I LOVE chuppahs ... BUT I would feel wrong using one. It's not just a decoration - it has a great deal of religous meaning. My FI & I took my BM's Dad's suggestions (he's a rabbi). We are going to use a wooden arch at our ceremony site & decorate it with flowers.

I would also say it's inappropriate to have a chuppa. What about an arch or decorating a gazebo, if your hall has one.

Re: Speaking of chuppahs ...
Hi! I also think chuppahs are beautiful, but I would have felt too weird about using something from the Jewish religion since FI is Protestant and I'm Catholic. I was worried that some of our Jewish guests would be offended. I decided to do something that looked sort of like a chuppah (I haven't seen an arch I like) , but didn't have 4 pillars, so there wasn't the house effect. Here's what I think I'm doing: it's 2 roman columns with a swag of organza fabric between them. It gives almost the same effect, but I don't think it can be considered a chuppah (anyone feel free to tell me if I'm wrong)

Here' s a picture. Just ignore the cake table and those twinkle lights
I was actually thinking the same -- the same as the above photo, but only 2 columns

wow - thats gorgeous ... thanks Jenny, I will see if my florist can do something like that. I like the idea of not have 4 columns anyway, cause I didnt really want to stand under the canopy of the chuppah

Re: Speaking of chuppahs ...
That's a PERFECT compromise!
A Chuppah HAS to have 4 posts, otherwise it's not a Chuppah.
Thanks Jennie!
